'Please, venerable one, accept me as a layperson who abstains from one precept,' and 'Please accept me as a layperson who abstains from killing and stealing,' and 'Please accept me as a layperson who abstains from killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct,' and so on, as before. 1-304 The precepts are, in addition to the previous ones, stating the precept of abstaining from killing, etc. Furthermore, if one bestows the vows of a complete layperson, which are common among the current Kachepas (referring to Islam) and others, as before: 'Since you have now entered the teachings of the teacher, pay homage three times to this image of the teacher, thinking it is the actual teacher.' Then, 'I think of you as the teacher who bestows the layperson's vows upon me, pay homage three times.' Then, in order for you to generate the layperson's vows, you must be imbued with the thought of renunciation. Therefore, in order to attain liberation from the three realms of samsara, nirvana, and the supreme non-abiding nirvana, request the Buddha as the teacher of the path, and act according to what he has taught to accept and reject. Request the Dharma as the true path within the content of the Noble Truth of the Path, and gradually enter the path of accumulation and the path of preparation, which are in accordance with the Noble Truth of the Path, and the path of seeing and the path of meditation, which are the characteristics of the Noble Truth of the Path. Request the Sangha as the true refuge in nirvana, which is the abandonment of all that is to be abandoned within the content of Dharma, and ultimately attain it. Request the Sangha as companions on the path, and practice the path in the company of pure conduct and Dharma-concordant friends.' Therefore, vow to uphold the layperson's vows until death, please repeat these words. 1-305 'Please listen, venerable one, I, named so-and-so, from this time until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme of bipeds, take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme of those free from desire, take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme of assemblies. Please, venerable one, accept me as a layperson until the end of my life.' Repeat twice. This third time has three parts: 'Until refuge in the Sangha' is saying refuge, 'I, until the end of my life, am a layperson' is saying oneself, 'Please, venerable one, accept' is saying others. Therefore, as soon as the word 'layperson' is completed, the layperson's vows arise in your continuum. Because I have become your teacher, at that time one should not say 'venerable one,' but must say 'teacher.' So do not forget, repeat this third time, and others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘Please, master, take me as a lay practitioner (Upasika) for as long as I live.’ The teacher says, ‘This is the method.’ The disciple says, ‘Excellent!’ This is the actual ritual. Having received the vows in this way, one must know what to protect and how to protect it, and then protect it. What should be protected are the four root downfalls plus alcohol; these five. The way to protect is: Just as the Arhats abandon these five things to be abandoned with their minds, and prevent them with their body and speech, so too, you should abandon the five things to be abandoned with your mind, thinking, ‘I will prevent them with my body and speech,’ and then repeat after me: ‘Just as those noble Arhats, for as long as they live, have abandoned killing and Sanskrit Romanization: vāpas, Chinese literal meaning: return) from killing; so too, I, named so-and-so, for as long as I live, will also Sanskrit Romanization: vāpas, Chinese literal meaning: return) from killing. With this first branch, I will follow, practice, and act according to the precepts of those noble Arhats.’ ‘Furthermore, just as those noble Arhats, for as long as they live, have abandoned taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicating grain alcohol and altered alcohol, which are places of carelessness, and Sanskrit Romanization: vāpas, Chinese literal meaning: return) from intoxicating grain alcohol and altered alcohol, which are places of carelessness; so too, I, named so-and-so, for as long as I live, will abandon taking what is not given, and so on, up to intoxicating grain alcohol and altered alcohol, which are places of carelessness, and Sanskrit Romanization: vāpas, Chinese literal meaning: return) from intoxicating grain alcohol and altered alcohol, which are places of carelessness. With this fifth branch, I will follow, practice, and act according to the precepts of those noble Arhats.’ Have them repeat it once, and the method is the same as before. When bestowing the complete Upasaka vows common to Kashmiris, it is sufficient to say, ‘Please take me as an Upasaka.’ But according to those below the Nyi'ogpa (lit. 'Sun Below School'), one must say, ‘Please take me as an Upasaka who abandons the five things to be abandoned.’ It is necessary to understand that this is a key point of the tenets. The Kashmiris assert that every Upasaka necessarily abandons the four root downfalls. The Nyi'ogpa divide Upasakas into those who have Upasaka vows and those who do not. Even for those who merely have the vows, they acknowledge vows to abandon one root downfall, to abandon two root downfalls, and to abandon all four root downfalls; this is the key point. Furthermore, if bestowing the Brahmacharya (celibate) Upasaka vows, the other rituals are the same, only replacing ‘sexual misconduct’ with ‘non-Brahmacharya’. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
