To enter the Buddhist teachings, one must understand the key points of taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Therefore, you must first prostrate three times before the Buddha image that is visibly present, or visualize in the space in front of you, the Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha surrounded by his retinue of Shravakas and Bodhisattvas. Then, to seek me as the teacher who bestows the vows, prostrate three times. Now, in order for the refuge vows to arise in your mindstream, you must have the thought of renunciation. Know that understanding the key points of refuge will give rise to the thought of renunciation. Therefore, contemplate as follows: Request the Buddha as the guide of the path, request the Dharma as the actual refuge and the actual path, request the Sangha as the companions on the path. Please repeat the following: 1-301 Venerable Sangha, please listen! I, named so-and-so, from this time forth, until reaching the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme among bipeds. Friends, especially do not associate with bad friends and friends with conflicting views and behaviors. Take refuge in the Three Jewels (དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་), offer flowers and other offerings to the Buddha, and diligently engage in offering activities such as respecting and pleasing the Sangha. This is merely the ritual for bestowing the vows of the uncommon refuge of the Great Vehicle. Since the Lesser Vehicle does not recognize the refuge vows with characteristics, for Nyo-og-pa (ཉི་འོག་པ་) and below, according to the Lesser Vehicle, they are only made to uphold the vows of a layperson who takes refuge. Then, even if you take the vows of a layperson, you will not be able to keep them, so it is best to only uphold the vows of a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels. Prostrate three times to the Teacher (སྟོན་པ་), and also prostrate three times to me. You, for the benefit of parents and sentient beings, must attain the state of Buddhahood. Therefore, only uphold the vows of a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels, and do as much good as you can. That is, regard the Buddha as the guide of the path, the Dharma (ཆོས་) as the true refuge and the true path, and the Sangha as the companions of the path, thinking in this way, uphold the vows of a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels. Please repeat these words: Venerable Sangha, please listen, I, named [so-and-so] (བདག་མིང་འདི་ཞེས་བྱ་བ།), from now until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha (སངས་རྒྱས།), the best of the two-legged. Take refuge in the Dharma (ཆོས།), the best of those free from desire. Take refuge in the Sangha (དགེ་འདུན།), the best of assemblies. Until the end of my life, please, Venerable Ones, accept me as a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels.' Repeat this three times. At the time of the third repetition, you become a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels. That is, the refuge words and the self-vow are completed, and when the other-vow begins, you become a layperson, so you must know that time.
