A Lamp of Light: Clarifying Doubts on the Samadhi of Accomplishing Longevity. A Lamp of Light: Clarifying Doubts on the Samadhi of Accomplishing Longevity. A Lamp of Light: Clarifying Doubts on the Samadhi of Accomplishing Longevity. Having pierced through the layers of pretense and coarseness, Opening the lotus of subtle and discerning wisdom. Adorning the aspirations of the holy ones, It is fitting to pay homage to that holy being. With the intellect that discerns the profound meaning, Extending the teachings of the final five hundred years, Like a delightful summer garden of joyous lotuses, That liberated one pours forth the honey of truthful words. Furthermore, without relying on others, as the illuminator of the early translation teachings, the unparalleled prince Gedun Tenzin Gyatso, in response to questions on the doubts of the Kadampa longevity practice, said this: In general, the approaches to the sadhana and meditation of these old and new longevity practices appear to have various differences, so there is much to examine. For example, in some practices, one visualizes oneself clearly as the deity, and from the heart's essence, the seed syllable and mantra garland, rays of light emanate and gather through the practice of radiating and withdrawing, collecting all the pure essence from which the life force of samsara and nirvana arises, and absorbing it into oneself, thus contemplating the attainment of the siddhi of longevity. In other practices, from the heart's essence, rays of light radiate upwards, offering to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and then gathering all the blessings and siddhis into oneself in the form of light. Then, rays of light radiate downwards, purifying the sins and obscurations of sentient beings, and establishing them in the state of the longevity deity, then gathering again and dissolving into the heart's essence, so that one's own self also blazes with supreme splendor, contemplating the attainment of the deathless vidyadhara of longevity. In yet other practices, through the emanation and gathering of light, the two purposes of benefiting oneself and others are accomplished, so that sentient beings obtain the wisdom life free from destruction, like a vajra. Afterwards, all the remaining parts of their worldly life are collected and absorbed into oneself, so that one contemplates that one's own self also becomes endowed with deathless life. In some practices, all of one's own diminished life, and the life stolen and plundered by gods, demons, and humans, and the life that has vanished into the elements, are summoned by the light of the heart's essence, abiding in the samadhi of the deity, and absorbed into the support of life, and so on. There appear to be many such methods. Among these methods, if one follows the first method, in general, whether greed is encompassed by non-virtuous actions, and...

If one visualizes in this way, does it harm the life of others, or benefit one's own life? If such a thing exists, then in the Mahayana scriptures, sacrificing one's life for the sake of many sentient beings is permitted, because even though it is a black karma, its ripening is said to be difficult. However, sacrificing the lives of many sentient beings for the sake of one sentient being is not permitted. In accordance with this, the Bodhisattva Shantideva also said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "For the sake of the small, one should not abandon the large; one should mainly consider the benefit of others." Therefore, this method contradicts those views. If there is no harm to the lives of others, then there will be no benefit to one's own life either, because the two are merely differences in visualization and have no essential difference. In that case, not only is it unnecessary, but the mental state at that time may also turn into greed. To this, someone might say that even so, if it is seized by a special bodhicitta, there is no contradiction. Then, it is also necessary to explain what kind of special bodhicitta that is. According to the second method, even without those harms, merely increasing one's own lifespan through the merit accumulated by performing the two benefits is no different from the sutra path. If it is said that it is different because there is the practice of deity yoga, then merely practicing such yoga is also mentioned in the Mahayana sutras. For example, the Samantabhadra's Prayer of Good Conduct says: "In each atom are Buddhas as numerous as atoms, dwelling in the midst of the Buddha's sons. Thus, the entire realm of Dharma is filled with Conquerors." and so on, as stated in many sutras. Therefore, here too, it is necessary to explain a special deity yoga as taught in the tantric scriptures. The third and fourth methods seem to be similar to the meaning of the longevity bath mentioned in the tantric texts during the liberation of the dead. Even so, all these methods are described appropriately in the qualified longevity practices of both the old and new traditions, so there seems to be a key to being able to explain all these methods in a way that is not contradictory. The analysis done here is not done for the purpose of negating others, but to discern the subtle right and wrong points in the current ritual practices.
