Thus, when practicing Dharma after gathering the conditions of the teacher, first, when grasping the beginning of the path, until practicing the intermediate practice, exert effort with diligence. Finally, death is the clear light Dharmakaya, therefore it is very important to contemplate death and impermanence, it is said. Furthermore, during the time of practice, visualize the Lama, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas, heroes, dakinis, Dharma protectors, and all the innate guardians, appearing in front of you like a mass of clouds. Then, offer your own body, possessions, servants, etc., as offerings. Pray to the great Vajradhara Lamas, the heroes and dakinis, and the innate Dharma protectors, to bless us practitioners, pacify obstacles, cause all the stages of the teachings to arise in our minds, and cause undeluded realization to arise in our minds. Pray in this way three or seven times. Then, contemplate the elderly and young people who were previously acquainted with you, as well as those who were your peers or who died before you. Then, comparing yourself to them, think, 'I too will die like them.' No matter what, death is certain, the time of death is uncertain, but ultimately one will not escape death, contemplate this repeatedly. So, at the time of death, one will not go to non-existence like the materialist heretics, contemplate this. So, one will not think that it is permanent and stable like the eternalist heretics, contemplate this. Furthermore, if one commits the ten non-virtuous actions dominated by hatred, one will be born in hell, experiencing the suffering of heat, cold, killing, etc., without a moment of cessation, contemplate this. If one commits the ten non-virtuous actions dominated by desire, one will be born as a hungry ghost, unable to hear the sound of food and drink, experiencing the suffering of hunger and thirst, without a moment of cessation, contemplate this. If one commits the ten non-virtuous actions dominated by ignorance, one will be born as an animal, experiencing the suffering of being foolishly exploited, etc., without a moment of happiness, think about this. So, if one is born in the three lower realms, the suffering is long and intense, and there is no way to endure it, so do not create the cause of falling into the lower realms—sin.
