The Tenth Volume of the Instructions Treasury: The Nectar of the Sacred Dharma, the Gradual Path of Dependent Arising The Tenth Volume of the Instructions Treasury The Nectar of the Sacred Dharma, the Gradual Path of Dependent Arising The Nectar of the Sacred Dharma, the Gradual Path of Dependent Arising To the Lama of the Kagyu lineage, who guides all beings on the vast path of seeing all dharmas, I prostrate with an ocean of devotion. All dharmas are none other than dependent arising. The instruction for establishing this is the seven-generation gradual path of meditation, which has two aspects: the dependent arising of the arising of qualities in equipoise, and the dependent arising of the perfection of abilities in post-meditation. The first is: In a place that is pleasing and agreeable, far from the thorns of distraction in meditation, abandon the supports that increase the desires, attachments, and cravings of this life. Separated from the thieves of the five obscurations and the ten non-virtues, sit on a comfortable seat in the vajra posture, with the hands bound in the mudra of equipoise below the navel. Straighten the spine, push the shoulders back, lower the neck slightly, place the tongue on the palate, and let the eyes gaze at the tip of the nose. With this posture complete, exhale once, and without effort in breathing in and out, let it rest naturally. In the very beginning, generate the aspiration to attain perfect Buddhahood for the sake of all sentient beings. For that purpose, enter into profound yoga. Thinking thus, on a precious throne and a lotus-moon cushion, visualize yourself as the fully enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, with a body like refined gold, adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs, extremely beautiful. The two hands are in the earth-touching and equipoise mudras, wearing the three dharma robes that are red like the light of a young cloud. The feet are seated in the vajra posture. In the sky above your crown, meditate on the root guru. Pray for blessings so that appearances arise as dependent arising. Pray with intense longing. In front of you, at a distance of about a yoke, visualize a moon mandala that is extremely clear and has a wheel of light rays. Focus your eyes and mind on it single-pointedly. Do not think about the past, such as "In the past, I did this, and from this, that arose." Do not think about the future, such as "Now I am doing this, and from this, that will or will not arise."

Therefore, regarding the collection of phenomena that appear, do not think, "This is good, this is bad, this is right, this is wrong," and do not analyze with wisdom. Do not deliberately meditate, "It is like this," and do not fall into the nihilistic view of "emptiness" as nothing at all. Do not meditate on artificial emptiness, nor on the superimposition and generalities that you think are wisdom. Then how should it be? Do not conceptualize anything, do not grasp anything, abandon all mindfulness and attention, and simply without distraction, relax the mind into its natural, uncorrected state, and rest single-pointedly. As the protector of beings, Gtsangpa, said, "If the mind is not fabricated, it is happy; if the water is not turbid, it is clear." Also, as Gling said, "If you leave it uncorrected like butter, realization will arise; if you guide it like a river, everything will also arise; completely abandon all objects of focus and signs, yogi, always rest in equanimity." Also, as Dezhin Shegpa Khampa Chenpo said in the Introduction to Mahamudra, "If you make the object of meditation and the meditator into duality, that is an artificial mind. Then how should it be? If you leave whatever arises, such as self-illumination, conceptual thoughts, and attachment to speech, without any alteration, you will become self-seeing." Also, as Saraha said, "Having completely abandoned all thought and objects of thought, like a young child resting freely, if you diligently follow the guru's instructions with respect, there is no doubt that coemergent wisdom will arise." Also, as Lord Maitreya said, "In this, there is nothing to be removed, nor is there anything to be established. In reality itself is the real deity. If you see reality, you are mistaken." Also in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra it says: "Even if bodhisattvas think that these aggregates are empty, they do not act with signs, and they do not believe in the unborn state." In the Two Examinations it says: "Therefore, do not meditate with the mind, but meditate on all beings." To this, some say: "The Holy Buddha said: 'Bind emptiness like space with the rope of wisdom, and the view will be unobstructed, Dingriwa.' Therefore, meditation without examination is foolish meditation, and the realization of vipassanā will not arise." However, that quote does not harm us, because if we begin to explain the meaning of that quote, then from the perspective of appearance, it is appearance, and searching for where it is established but not finding it, that is emptiness, and the one who searches for it is called wisdom, but this is not the same as the wisdom established through hearing and thinking.
