After the outer breath has ceased, cut off the throbbing of that pulse and press down firmly. After pressing down for a moment, remind him: Now is the clear light dharmakaya; together, relax and abide in that state. The crown chakra will open, radiant and warm, and heat or wind will burst forth. If such signs do not appear, it is certain that he is of middling faculty. Because wind has escaped into the right and left channels, although awareness may dawn, the path will appear. If there is doubt as to whether he is dead or not, at that time call him by name. Since you are dead, the remaining part of the generation and completion stages, recitations, and so forth, that you previously practiced, visualize and meditate clearly. If, after saying this, he smiles, or his eyes twitch, or his lips move, or his head lifts, or his arms and legs stretch out, and the warmth remains for a long time, then he has been reborn. For those of extremely inferior faculty, strive to perform virtuous deeds such as the seven-day ceremony, cremation, tsatsas, and so forth. If you yourself do not possess the practice of the deity and must go elsewhere, then completely cut off the attachments of this life. Place the right side underneath, press down on the pulse with the elbow, and block the mouth and nose with the fingers of the hand. By this, one goes to the realm of the dakinis. Do not have any doubt about this. Maitri's instruction, the decisive cutting through the bardo, is complete. Homage to the noble gurus! The glorious heart essence, the instruction for decisive cutting through the bardo, in which awareness is seen from the outside.

Bardo. The result bardo of manifesting meaning. First, in general, all knowable dharmas abide from the beginning in the nature of being nothing whatsoever, the original, all-pervading vastness. Due to not realizing its meaning, and due to the power of realization, one falls into either samsara or nirvana. To realize it, there are three methods: view, meditation, and conduct. First, establishing the view: one's own awareness, the mind of bodhichitta, abiding in the nature of being nothing whatsoever, is interrupted by sudden delusion. Therefore, it must be connected with the precious instructions of the lama. The way to connect, no matter what the order of the supporting faculties, no matter what kind of introduction is given, it will not go beyond the way of realizing the view. That is, believing by realizing the general characteristic of the meaning, and experiencing by realizing the self-characteristic of the meaning. For example, like knowing the warmth of medicine and tasting the flavor. In this regard, the general view is that realizing the general characteristic of the general meaning only stops karma, and it is believed that it cannot cut off the bardo. According to this instruction, just like knowing the history of Samye Monastery, meeting the lama who teaches this dharma at the time of death, it is believed that the bardo will be cut off. If even the general characteristic is not realized, then one should become familiar with any one of the generation stage yidams. The self-characteristic of the dharmata, like a person waking up from sleep, seeing the original meaning nakedly, is called realizing the view. It is believed that this will cut off the bardo. Second, there are two bardos of taking meditation into practice: those of superior faculties can be liberated all at once, and those of intermediate and lower faculties can be liberated gradually. The superior one is that one realizes the knowable all at once by oneself or by others, just like a person waking up from sleep. This. Just saying "yes" is in accordance with the previous history, like the road recognizing the road, like the view. For someone who has the capacity for view, a lama will say to you: The clear light of the first bardo is when the outer breath ceases and all dharmas appear empty and naked like the sky. Recognize it and abide in it. At that time, I will also give instructions. In this way, one can recognize the first bardo without doubt. Also, even if instructed, the bardo itself cannot be manifested by those who are not familiar with it, so the lama will urge again.
