I, from the Garland of Pearls: Mind arises from accumulation, and is also mixed with defilements, therefore, the alaya-consciousness, etc., also become part of the number of defilements. The difference between mind and wisdom should be known by the wise. Mind is the basis of all habits, and is the defilement of sentient beings. The mind grasps the object to be grasped, therefore, it is the nature of samsara. If that mind is separated, one becomes a Buddha, and the defilements of all sentient beings are exhausted. Beings go by that mind, otherwise they cannot go. Therefore, beings are like a revolving wheel. However, the heart (thugs) is free from all movement, not like a stubborn stone, but a manifestation of knowing, awakening, and illuminating. It burns all conceptual thoughts, and wisdom devours like fire, being equal to space, it is empty and clear awareness. Therefore, wisdom shows light. Unseparated great compassion arises spontaneously, pervading and explaining everything, perfecting all dharmas. Memory itself is non-memory, therefore, wisdom is free from the basis of memory. Wisdom is like this: the wisdom of the pure base, possessing the nature of holding and the pervasiveness of the object. Thus it is said. The detailed explanation of these sequences should be understood as explained in the precious supreme vehicle. Thus, the determination of the difference between alaya-consciousness and dharmakaya, mind and wisdom, is the key point of differentiation in the Great Perfection Heart Essence, therefore, it is very important to distinguish the differences. Within them, the differentiation of the certainty of cause and effect resides, therefore, it is taught: In this nature, there is no search for cause and effect, nor are there views, practices, etc. It speaks of the way of negating the absence of beginning and end, otherwise, in the activity of scattering outside of nature, various plays manifest, and nine kinds of appearances arise, so never say that there is no cause and effect. Because the dharmakaya wisdom is naturally present in the essence of purity, in relation to the nature of ultimate truth, it is taught that cause and effect, acceptance and rejection, and searching, etc., are inherently non-existent. However, from the alaya-consciousness and its activity, many consciousnesses arise, and various samsaric dharmas manifest, to all those who possess conceptual thoughts, if one says that there is no cause and no effect, etc., then one will fall into the view of annihilation like a nihilist. The worldly dharmas of samsara are the union of causes and conditions.

It appears from the power of illusion. How does it appear? Conditioned phenomena arising from interdependent causes are countless and inconceivable. The illusions of samsara and the peace of nirvana are also countless and inconceivable. All of that is the interdependence of causes and conditions. Pure lands and happiness, impure lands and suffering, all pervading like the expanse of space, are all appearances of interdependent causes and conditions, like illusions. Although they are empty because they have no essence, the appearance of forms is the power of interdependence, just as horses and cattle appear from the mantras and substances of illusion. In the Sutra of the Collection of Noble Qualities, it says: "The nature of the realm of space is also endless. The wisdom that guides the world is also endless. The nature of the realm of sentient beings is also endless." And in the King of Samadhi Sutra, it says: "Actions done and accumulated never disappear or change. Even in samsara, black and white fruits ripen." And in the Jewel Heap Sutra, it says: "From virtuous actions, all happiness arises, and countless Buddha-fields are seen. From non-virtuous actions, all suffering arises, and one experiences the burning places of the lower realms and bad migrations." The distinction of averting from cause and effect is as follows: If measured by nature, nothing is established. By practicing on the path, when the nature is unwavering, nothing is fixated upon, and it is valued at the time of contemplation. When the nature is perfected, nothing is stained. The wisdom of the Dharmakaya's ultimate meaning, at the time of contemplation residing in its own nature, nothing is established in samsara and nirvana, cause and effect, etc., because all elaboration is pacified and there is no establishment or refutation. Just as the nature itself has no action, as if samsara is cut off, to act without moving from it at all times is to avert to the Great Perfection of cause and effect. This is what is meant by transcending good and evil, cause and effect. Otherwise, by being confused about cause and effect, even if one does not desire samsara, it will arise, just as a sprout arises from a seed placed in a combination of warmth and moisture. If a part of delusion is lost from the nature, then the yogi has no attainment. Therefore, until stability is attained, it is important not to be deceived by adverse conditions. Therefore, the practice of the power of clear wisdom is extremely precious. In the Garland of Pearls, it says: "This is the state of perfect enlightenment, unwavering from its own nature."
