The nature of the ālaya is non-conceptual, unindicated, formless consciousness, a place similar to ignorance. Its essence is the appearance of the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the basis for the arising of the sense consciousnesses. As a substitute for compassion, it is the six consciousnesses together with their grasping of objects. These accumulate many karmas of samsara, but mainly, if one is accustomed to the state of the ālaya, it is formless; if accustomed to the appearance of the ālaya-vijñāna, it has form; the six consciousnesses open the door to delusion in desire. Now, practicing the ālaya, and practicing the appearance of the ālaya-vijñāna, merely cultivating clarity and non-mentation, and cultivating the six consciousnesses so that thoughts arise and are immediately liberated, all of this does not transcend the three realms. Here, by recognizing the naked awareness, one grasps the root dharmakāya. By not expecting to meditate in non-conceptual quiescence, one perverts the ālaya. By not making the cultivation of clarity the path, one perverts the appearance of the ālaya-vijñāna. By not making the outward arising of thoughts the path, one perverts the six consciousnesses, and thus constantly abides in the wisdom of the three kāyas: dharmakāya, sambhogakāya, and nirmāṇakāya. The nature of awareness, which is not established in anything, abides in emptiness, which is the wisdom of the dharmakāya. Naked awareness together with clarity is the wisdom of the sambhogakāya. The uninterrupted appearance of awareness, thoroughly understood, is the wisdom of the nirmāṇakāya. At any time, it is necessary for awareness to emerge nakedly, that is the key. If it does not emerge nakedly, one cannot be liberated from the consciousness of the three realms, and therefore one cannot transcend samsara by even a single hair's breadth. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between the ālaya and the dharmakāya. The nature of the ālaya is that it becomes a container for habitual tendencies. The definition is that the ālaya is a dharma of samsara, and because it is its basis, it is the ālaya. The divisions are the ālaya of the body, which is the beginningless habitual tendency that appears as the body, and from that, it becomes the basis for the aggregation of individual bodies; the ālaya of conjoining meaning, which is the ignorance that is the basis for accumulating all the karmas that conjoin beings to existence, such as the aggregates; and the ālaya of ultimate meaning, which is the beginningless ignorance that universally depends on the dharmas of samsara; these are the three. The nature of the dharmakāya is naked awareness, free from elaboration. The definition is the nature of the meaning of the true dharma, and because it is its basis, it is the kāya. The divisions are the three: essence, nature, and compassion, which abide in the three kāyas.

Furthermore, in the Refutation Treatise, it says: The key points of the Alaya and the Dharmakaya. Now, let's first discuss the Alaya. It is the basis of all that is Dharma and non-Dharma, possessing essence, definition, and distinctions. Its essence is the container of all habitual imprints. Its distinctions are body, union, variety, and the primordial ground. Its definition is that it gathers from all; the ground is the collection and accumulation. The Dharmakaya is free from elaboration, without any characteristics of self-grasping. Its essence is emptiness and clarity, inseparable. Its distinctions are the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya, distinguished by the three Kayas, thus differences arise. Its definition is that the Dharma is the true path, and the Kaya is accomplished from it. Also, in the Garland of Pearls, it says: The Alaya is the cause of accumulation, the Dharmakaya is the exhaustion of defilements. Empty and clear, clear and pervasive, unpolluted by thought, memory is clear. It is free from elaboration, pervasive and empty like the sky, free from all self-purifying signs. The Alaya, with its causes and conditions, is like a pond because of the accumulation of habitual imprints. The Dharmakaya is free from habitual imprints. From the gathering of mind and mental factors, the Alaya of sentient beings appears in many forms. Because the Dharmakaya is free from mind and so on, the many forms are the appearance of formlessness. For details, one should know it from the Treasury of Clear Light Jewels. The key points of mind and wisdom are: The essence of mind is delusion and conceptualization. Its definition is that it is called mind because it thinks about objects. Its distinctions are pure mind, which is directed towards liberation and is non-conceptual, and impure mind, which conceptualizes samsara. The essence of wisdom is to identify the reversal of knowledge from the aspect of the Dharmakaya. Its definition is that it is wisdom because it is the knowledge that has always been present in the Dharmakaya. Its distinctions are: the wisdom of the ground, whose essence is the three: nature, essence, and compassion; the wisdom that apprehends characteristics, such as the Dharmadhatu and the five wisdoms; and the wisdom that pervades all objects, which is the two: as-it-isness and how-many-there-are-ness. In the Refutation Treatise, it says: The key points of mind and wisdom are: Mind is called delusion and conceptualization, its essence is entering and pervading, it is the basis of memory and thought. Its distinctions are pure and impure. Its definition is that the object of memory arises from thought. What is minded, by what is it minded, what is minded about, and why is it minded? Wisdom is not conceptualization, its essence is the meaning of self-luminous essence. Its distinctions are considered to be three pure ones. Its definition is the meaning of being primordially present. Knowing it in this way is wisdom.
