Tenth, Commentary on the Chapter of the Speaker and Scholar. Tenth, Commentary on the Chapter of the Speaker and Scholar. Thus, after pointing out the place of hearing the sacred Dharma, in order to ascertain how to listen, the first is a brief exposition: Thus, having abandoned sinful friends and fully relied on virtuous spiritual friends, from that, first generate the wisdom of hearing. This is said to be the root of liberation. The person who seeks liberation is called a great being, and he first abandons sinful friends and relatives, and then relies on a virtuous and excellent spiritual friend. When asked what the main meaning to be sought is, the answer is that liberation is supreme. When asked how to accomplish it and its nature, it is advised to take morality as the basis, and first engage in hearing and thinking, and then it is explained that later one should practice its meaning. Therefore, first entering into sacred hearing is said to be the root of liberation. Take the vows and morality as the basis, as Nagarjuna said: Morality is like the earth for what is born and not born, the Buddha said it is the basis and support of qualities. Thus it is said. Then there is hearing, thinking, and practicing, as Vasubandhu said: Abiding in morality, possessing hearing and thinking, one should diligently engage in practice. Thus it is said. Explaining extensively the meaning of how to hear, first it is taught that the preceptor should examine the vessel according to the order of the gurus: Therefore, when that excellent guru with extensive learning and ten qualities fully explains the sacred Dharma to the fortunate disciple, it is important to first examine the capacity of the vessel. Those gurus who do not understand the intellectual types of the beings to be tamed, are confused about the meaning of what is to be known, are not skilled in the combination of words and speech, only look at material gains, conceal the Dharma, desire worldly fame, are weak in the practice of Dharma, are tired of working for the benefit of others, are arrogant and jealous, are stingy with the Dharma, and confuse the Dharma with their own minds, should be abandoned. One should receive hearing from a guru who possesses the ten qualities of perfection. As it is said in the "Sacred Dharma Perfectly Gathered Sutra": If a speaker possesses ten qualities, then he is learned and has accumulated hearing, and is a holder of hearing. He does not despise others, has definite words without doubt about the Dharma and its meaning, and possesses perfect confidence.

Although possessing perfect qualities, one does not diminish the effort to seek learning; although knowing the times, measures, medicines, speech, and meanings, one does not abandon reliance on elderly spiritual friends; although knowing the scriptures, the Vinaya, the Sutras, the Abhidharma, and Suchness, one does not give up the practice of questioning others; although being easy to please, easy to care for, and possessing excellent rituals and conduct, one does not abandon the practice of serving the Lama; although being disciplined, peaceful, purified, and fearless, one does not abandon the practice of having shame and knowing embarrassment; although being skilled in the profound and vast Dharma meanings, one also engages in accordance with worldly thoughts; although being naturally upright, gentle, and easy to associate with, and engaging in accordance with the thoughts of sentient beings, one does not associate with the immoral and violent; although delighting in generosity, discipline, unwavering friendship, rituals, and abiding, one does not fixate the mind on everything, and does not conceptually think about the field of experience; although extracting latent tendencies, pervasive afflictions, and suffering, one does not abandon the effort to abandon the afflictions of other sentient beings. Such a Lama, for the listener who respects the Dharma and the teacher, seeks liberation, possesses wisdom, and is impartial, having become a vessel for seeking meaning, when teaching the profound and vast place of liberation, the sacred Dharma, it is crucial to examine the vessel first. Just as food differs for children and the elderly, so too does their Dharma nature differ. Therefore, in the world, one should first give warm and extremely soft food to a newborn infant; if one gives rough and hard food, it will turn into poison. For those who have grown up, give various kinds of food like a bunch. For beginners, teach the faults of samsara and the benefits of liberation, the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, impermanence of life, and so on, causing them to turn their minds away from samsara. Initially, one should explain that all phenomena are without inherent existence, and so on. For those of lower intellect, teach the Dharma of Hearers and Solitary Realizers; for those of intermediate intellect, teach the Vehicle of Reasoning; for those of great intellect, teach the Secret Mantra Vajrayana. Or, for the three types of lower intellect, teach the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. For the three types of intermediate intellect, teach the three sections of Action, Performance, and Yoga. For the three types of superior intellect, teach the three stages of Generation, Completion, and Great Completion. As it is said in the Ati Great Perfection Tantra:
