Because it is a lower precept that does not belong to the eight vows of Pratimoksha (individual liberation vow), it is not good to keep such a precept. Here, even the lay practitioners of Hinayana (lesser vehicle) who belong to the eight vows of Pratimoksha must have the initial intention to be liberated from all cycles of existence. If there is the Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment) of wanting to attain complete enlightenment for the benefit of others, it will become the Vinaya (discipline) of protecting against transgressions of Mahayana (greater vehicle). On top of that, if it is combined with the rituals of secret mantra, through the recitation and meditation of the Yidam deity, and combined with the asceticism of body, speech, and mind, it will also become the ascetic vow of protecting against transgressions of Kriya Tantra (action tantra), so strive to do as much of those as possible. In any case, what needs to be protected is the eight-fold upavasatha vow (one-day vow), which are the four root vows, one branch of mindfulness that stems from them, and three branches of ascetic practice. These eight vows must be well-kept for one full day and night. That is, not to mention large beings such as humans or horses, do not kill even small beings such as lice and fleas, that is one. Not to mention large possessions, do not take even small things such as needles and thread without being given, that is the second. Not to mention actual sexual activity between men and women, do not even look at each other with lustful thoughts, that is the third. Not to mention great lies about spiritual attainments, do not even lie for the sake of joking, these four are the four branches of discipline. Do not loosen the gate of carelessness, do not drink alcohol that causes many faults to arise, this is one branch of mindfulness. Do not use inappropriate high and large seats that cause unnecessary pride to increase, this is one. From noon of this continent until the sun rises the next day, do not eat untimely food, this is the second. Do not apply fragrance to the body with a flirtatious mind, do not wear pearl necklaces, and other fine clothes and ornaments, all of these combined is not to wear ornaments such as necklaces. Do not engage in distracting activities such as singing and dancing, in short, combine both ornaments and games into one. Do not do any of these, these three are called the branches of ascetic practice, so with the intention of not letting these eight precepts decline, keep them well, and repeat the words of commitment three times. From now on, I will not kill, nor will I take the property of others.

One should not engage in adultery, nor should one speak falsehoods. One should completely abstain from alcohol, which brings many faults. One should not use high and luxurious beds, and similarly, one should not consume food at inappropriate times. One should abstain from perfumes, garlands, and ornaments, as well as dances and songs. Just as Arhats (Sanskrit: Arhat, a liberated being who will not be reborn) always avoid actions such as killing, so too should I avoid killing and the like. May I swiftly attain the unsurpassed Bodhi (Sanskrit: Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, complete enlightenment). May the many sentient beings struggling in suffering be liberated from the ocean of Samsara (cyclic existence). Repeat three times. The benefits of guarding these eight precepts are as follows: Generally, merely guarding precepts with fear and good wishes can liberate one from the lower realms and grant one the fortunate bodies of gods and humans. Guarding the Hinayana (Theravada Buddhism) Upavasa (one-day vows) will ensure rebirth as a member of Maitreya Buddha's (Sanskrit: Maitreya, the future Buddha) retinue. By gradually practicing the Dharma, one will be liberated from all of Samsara and attain definitive Nirvana (Sanskrit: Nirvana, liberation). Guarding the Mahayana (Mahayana Buddhism) precepts will lead to the gradual attainment of unsurpassed great Bodhi. In particular, if combined with the asceticism of Tantra (Vajrayana Buddhism), one will quickly enter the ranks of Vidyadharas (Sanskrit: Vidyadhara, knowledge holders), and it will not be long, no more than sixteen lifetimes, before one undoubtedly attains the ultimate Siddhi (Sanskrit: Siddhi, accomplishment) of Mahamudra (Sanskrit: Mahamudra, the great seal), which is never deceptive. And so on, there are immeasurable benefits. Especially in this degenerate age of the five degenerations, even being able to guard the precepts well for a short time is more excellent than guarding the precepts for a long time in the past when the Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon appeared, because the former is more difficult to do, and therefore has greater benefits. And so on, the Buddha himself has repeatedly bestowed infallible teachings on the countless gates of benefits in the 'Glorious Praise,' so have unwavering faith in this. Now, in order to ensure that such a collection of precepts never declines and is completely purified, please recite the beneficial Dharani (Sanskrit: Dharani, a type of mantra) mentioned in scriptures such as the 'Arya Don Yö Zhag Pa's Tantra,' first reciting the introduction once, and then reciting it twenty-one times. By sealing such a collection of pure precepts with the nature of emptiness, in order to perfect the Paramita (Sanskrit: Paramita, perfection) of precepts, please recite this passage that GyaltsabMipham (Tibetan: rgyal tshab mi pham) previously explained well in the Lamrim (stages of the path). Please also follow and recite: The precepts of discipline are without fault, the precepts are completely pure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
