Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD171: 'The Vow of Fasting and Purification: The Sun of Benefiting Others' 'The Vow of Fasting and Purification: The Sun of Benefiting Others' 'The Vow of Fasting and Purification: The Sun of Benefiting Others' Homage to the excellent refuge, the precious Three Jewels. Here, regarding the method of fasting and purification: For the sake of establishing all sentient beings, as vast as the sky, in the state of unsurpassed great enlightenment, I shall now take the Mahayana vow of purification. With the thought of generating the supreme Bodhicitta, listen well. The sacred Dharma of the Mahayana vow of purification that is to be listened to is that which has been well-spoken by the unequaled teacher, possessing the ten powers, who is the great, unacquainted friend of all beings who have come before in this fortunate eon. The teacher who performs the purification, the all-seeing, omniscient one, who appeared in the past, never departs from Suchness, thus is the Tathagata (Tathāgata, Sanskrit, Tathāgata, Thus Gone), separated from the enemies of the four maras, both subtle and gross, thus is the Arhat (Arhat, Sanskrit, Arhat, Worthy One), having completely perfected the qualities of abandonment and realization, and having dispelled ignorance and expanded the light of supreme wisdom, thus is the Samyaksaṃbuddha (Samyaksaṃbuddha, Sanskrit, Samyaksaṃbuddha, Perfectly Enlightened One). Like a well-trained horse, not abiding at the edge of samsara and nirvana, majestic with the great burden of the supreme vehicle, not abiding at the extremes of existence and peace, thus is the Great Elephant (Nagendra, Sanskrit, Nagendra, Lord of Elephants). Having completely perfected the two accumulations for one's own benefit, the deed has been done; having fulfilled the hopes of all disciples to be tamed for the benefit of others, the action has been done. Having abandoned all subtle and gross sufferings, the burden has been cast off. Having attained the excellent pure body free from defilements, one's own benefit has been obtained. Having abandoned all latent tendencies of affliction that connect to samsara, both subtle and gross, the connection to existence has been completely exhausted. The words spoken are authoritative and never deceiving, thus are the true words. The mind is perfectly liberated, free from the obscuration of afflictions. The wisdom is perfectly liberated, free from the obscuration of knowledge. Such a compassionate teacher, endowed with such qualities, for what purpose? For the sake of accomplishing the ultimate benefit of all sentient beings, and also to bring about temporary and ultimate happiness for beings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the sake of benefiting beings with the status of gods and humans, for the sake of liberating them from definitive liberation, especially for the sake of purifying the karmic results of temporary unpleasantness and harmful thoughts, thereby becoming free from illness, for the sake of purifying the karmic results of miserliness, thereby being free from famine, for the sake of perfecting the path of purification, namely the Dharma of the ground, learning the path, mindfulness, the abidings, and so forth, the factors of enlightenment, and for the sake of realizing the ultimate fruit, the great and unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, for the sake of these needs, acting with skillful means. As it is said: 'For the sake of accumulating merit and purifying sins, the Thus-Gone One has taught the Uposatha.' Therefore, in order to greatly accumulate and increase all the roots of virtue in the minds of all beings, and to purify and cleanse all the stains of sin, the Buddhas of the past skillfully taught the methods of the Uposatha ritual and practiced it accordingly. Now, I, who am called '...', also wish to take the Uposatha purely and completely from this time until the sun rises tomorrow, with the intention of doing so. Repeat these words three times. Just as the Thus-Gone Ones, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas of the past, like a tamed horse, a great elephant, having done what was to be done, having accomplished what was to be accomplished, having laid down the burden, having attained their own benefit, having completely exhausted all bonds of existence, with perfect teachings, minds that are well liberated, and wisdom that is well liberated, for the sake of all sentient beings, for the sake of benefiting, liberating, making them free from illness, making them free from famine, for the sake of perfecting the factors of enlightenment, and for the sake of realizing the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, certainly practiced the Uposatha, so too, I, who am called '...', from this time until the sun rises tomorrow, will certainly take the Uposatha perfectly.' Repeat these words three times. Then, taking the eight precepts of the temporal vows, generally, for the sake of protecting from illnesses and so forth in this life, and aiming for the cause of attaining the high status of gods and humans in the next life, keeping the eight precepts is merely a discipline of protecting from fear and wishing for goodness. Then, taking the eight-limbed vows of the temporal precepts, generally, for the sake of protecting from illnesses and so forth in this life, and aiming for the cause of attaining the high status of gods and humans in the next life, keeping the eight precepts is merely a discipline of protecting from fear and wishing for goodness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
