Suffering and equanimity (Tibetan: བཏང་སྙོམས་, Sanskrit: upekṣā, Roman transliteration: upekṣā, literal meaning: abandonment), each of these has its corresponding object of focus. Now, one's own mind may be happy, may be painful, or may be neither happy nor painful. Whatever feeling arises, happiness, pain, etc., is mixed with afflictions, ignorance, laziness, etc., and cannot be completely pure. Therefore, all manifested feelings are said to be tainted (Tibetan: ཟག་པ་, Sanskrit: āsrava, Roman transliteration: asrava, literal meaning: leakage) and afflicted. It is said that as long as there are afflictions in one's mind, the mind will become worse and worse, constantly sinking downwards, so all afflictions are called tainted. Underground are the hells, hungry ghosts, and animal realms. On the ground are all humans. Then there are all the gods. Counting from the bottom up, the six desire realms are the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, Yama, Tushita, Nirmāṇarati, and Paranirmita-vaśavartin. The seventeen realms of the form realm are: counting from the bottom up, the three realms of the first dhyāna are Brahma-pāriṣadya, Brahma-purohita, and Mahābrahmā. The three realms of the second dhyāna are Parīttābha, Apramāṇābha, and Ābhāsvara. The three realms of the third dhyāna are Parīttaśubha, Apramāṇaśubha, and Śubhakṛtsna. The three realms of the fourth dhyāna are Anabhraka, Puṇyaprasava, and Bṛhatphala. The five pure abodes are Avṛha, Atapa, Sudṛśa, Sudarśana, and Akaniṣṭha. Above these are the four formless realms: Ākāśānantyāyatana, Vijñānānantyāyatana, Ākiñcanyāyatana, and Naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatana. Here, because attachment to one's own property, power, material possessions, and even land, etc., becomes a contributing factor to the arising of afflictions such as greed and hatred, gradually, the mind becomes accustomed to many afflictions, creating negative karma, leading to the inevitable suffering of great pain in the next life. Therefore, it is said that these possessions cause suffering to oneself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
