Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD49: A Concise Treatise on the Expression of Names, Referents, and Categories A Concise Treatise on the Expression of Names, Referents, and Categories If it is the nature of knowable, it is necessarily not the signified. If it is the signified, it is necessarily not the nature of knowable. If it possesses the three qualities of knowable substance, it is necessarily the nature. If it is knowable, it is not necessarily possessing the three qualities of knowable substance, nor is it necessarily not possessing them. If the base is established, it necessarily does not contradict the knowable. If the base is established, it is not necessarily contradictory to a pot, nor is it necessarily not contradictory. If it is the opposite of being neither a pillar nor a pot, it is necessarily non-existent. If it is the signified, it is not necessarily permanent, nor is it necessarily not permanent. Even if it is the nature, it is the same as this. If the eight pervasions of name and signified are established, it is not necessarily a correct name and signified, nor is it necessarily not correct. If it is free from the three common faults of nature, it is not necessarily a correct nature, nor is it necessarily not correct. If it is the nature of one occasion, it necessarily is not the basis of that occasion. The signified is also the same as this. If it is the nature of one occasion, it is not necessarily the basis of another occasion, nor is it necessarily not. If it is the nature, it is not necessarily compounded, nor is it necessarily not. If the base is established, it is not necessarily your nature different from yourself, nor is it necessarily not. If it is permanent, it is not necessarily the signified, nor is it necessarily not. If it is the nature, it is not necessarily able to understand its signified at first, nor is it necessarily not able to. If it is perceived by valid cognition, it is not necessarily momentary, nor is it necessarily not. If it exists, it is not necessarily the object of knowable, nor is it necessarily not. If it exists, it is not necessarily the negation of knowable, nor is it necessarily not. If it exists, it is not necessarily the self-negation that can be an object of mind, nor is it necessarily not. This applies to all. If it is equally pervasive, it is not necessarily name and signified, nor is it necessarily not. If the essence is one, it is not necessarily name and signified, nor is it necessarily not. If the essence is one, it is not necessarily contradictory, nor is it necessarily not. If it is impossible to exist, it is not necessarily existent, nor is it necessarily not. If it is not momentary, it is not necessarily existent, nor is it necessarily not. If it possesses the three qualities of substance, it is not necessarily the nature of established base, nor is it necessarily not. If it possesses the three qualities of imputation, it is not necessarily the signified perceived by valid cognition, nor is it necessarily not. This applies to all.

Expressed (mTsHon-bya, that which is expressed): If it is a thing, is it pervaded by existence or non-existence? The nature is also the same. If it is a thing, is it pervaded by having a nature or not having a nature? The expressed is the same as this. If the meaning, counter-entity, and self-nature of a thing are the same, is it pervaded by having the nature of a thing or not having the nature of a thing? If the self-counter-entity and essence of a thing are the same, is it pervaded by being permanent or not permanent? If it is not contradictory to a pot, is it pervaded by being universally contradictory or not universally contradictory? If it is related to a pot, is it pervaded by being a universal expressed or not a universal expressed? If it is selfless, is it pervaded by being established by its own nature or not established by its own nature? If it is a dharma, is it pervaded by being merely an aggregation with nature or not an aggregation with nature? If it is a pot, is it pervaded by the counter-entity of a pot? Or is it also not pervaded by not being the counter-entity of a pot. The sound called 'knowledge' is merely a sound expressing category. 1. The sound called 'pillar and pot' is merely a sound expressing collection. 2. The sound called 'pot' is a sound that is both a category expression and a collection expression. 3. The sound called 'the counter-entity of a pot' is a sound that is neither a category expression nor a collection expression. Extremely long life is perfection of life. Beautiful appearance is perfection of appearance. Noble birth is perfection of lineage. Vast enjoyment is perfection of wealth. Dignified speech is perfection of speech. Great power is perfection of authority. Having male organs is perfection of the male race. If this is divided into eight, then on top of these, adding perfection of strength is the eighth. The twelve sources are: the eye source, the ear source, the nose source, the tongue source, the body source, and the mind source; the form source (gzugs-kyi skye-mChed, source of form, form element), if eye consciousness arises from form, then it is the eye faculty; the sound source, the smell source, the taste source, the touch source, and the dharma source, totaling twelve sources. The first six are the doors through which consciousnesses arise and extend to external objects, so they are called that. The latter six are the doors through which self-grasping consciousnesses arise in their respective aspects, so they are called that. The eighteen realms are: the six realms from eye to mind, the six realms from form to dharma, and the six realms from eye consciousness to mind consciousness, totaling eighteen realms. These are the places where each grasps its own different kind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
