The Samadhi of focused concentration is quiescence (zhi gnas). At that time, the first mental engagement (yid byed) of the first access concentration (nyer bsdogs) is accomplished. Then, the wisdom of desire that examines the aspects of serenity and coarseness is the second discerning mental engagement (sor rig yid byed). Through the examination of this mental engagement, not only does the abiding aspect become disturbed, but it also becomes stable, which is the third aspiration mental engagement (mos pa yid byed), and insight (lhag mthong) is accomplished. Then, just to abandon the manifestation of the nine desire-realm afflictions, the great desire-realm afflictions are divided into three: great, medium, and small. The medium and small afflictions are each divided in this way, so there are nine. When the path of non-obstruction (bar chad med lam) is attained from abandoning the manifestation of the first desire-realm affliction, the fourth access concentration, the excellent isolation mental engagement (rab dben yid byed), is attained. This destroys the three manifestations of the great afflictions. Then, when the path of non-obstruction is attained from abandoning the manifestation of the fourth desire-realm affliction, the fifth access concentration, the joy-gathering mental engagement (dga' sdud yid byed), is attained. This destroys the three manifestations of the medium afflictions. Then, the wisdom that examines whether there are any remaining desire-realm afflictions is the sixth access concentration, the examining mental engagement (dpyod pa yid byed). After that, when the path of non-obstruction is attained from abandoning the manifestation of the seventh desire-realm affliction, the seventh access concentration, the peak of application mental engagement (sbyor mtha'i yid byed), is attained. This can also destroy the three manifestations of the small afflictions. Then, when the path of liberation (rnam grol lam) is attained from abandoning the manifestation of the ninth desire-realm affliction, the fruition mental engagement of the peak of application is attained, and at this time, the actual basis of the first dhyana is accomplished. The Samadhi of the actual basis of the first dhyana is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to desire-realm afflictions and attached to investigation and analysis (rtog dpyod). The Samadhi of the actual basis of the second dhyana is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to investigation and analysis and attached to joy and bliss (dga' bde). The actual basis of the third dhyana is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to investigation, analysis, and joy, and attached to pleasure (bde ba). The actual basis of the fourth dhyana is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to investigation, analysis, joy, and pleasure, and attached to form (gzugs snang). The first of the formless realms is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to form and attached to the aspect of space (nam mkha'i snang cha). The second is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to the aspect of space and attached to the aspect of consciousness (rnam shes kyi snang cha). The third is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to the aspect of consciousness and attached to the aspect of nothingness (ci yang med). The fourth is: a peaceful mind that is free from attachment to the aspect of nothingness and attached to neither perception nor non-perception (ci yang med) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- མན་ཆད་

Thereafter, it is not that there is a coarse 'suchness' perception, nor is it that there is no subtle perception like the perception of one's own nature, but rather it is a peaceful mind that abides in the state of possessing both. It is said: Ordinary wandering thoughts of conceptualization, are the source of the accumulation of faults and afflictions. Having ascertained the root of all faults, be mindful from this direction. Regarding whatever is the true nature of the Dharma, with the wisdom that distinguishes its meaning, the clarity of realizing it as it is, rely on the collection of goodness that shines most brightly. This was taken by a student with learning and a mind for the Dharma, with diligence in seeking its meaning. In the way that it appeared clearly in the mind, it was again put down in the form of notes. May I, through this virtuous deed, in all my lives, never slacken in diligence in the Buddha's teachings, and may I be able to accomplish all the benefits of myself and others! Thus, this concise explanation of *zhi* (shamatha), *lhag* (vipashyana), *samadhi*, etc., which is necessary for beginners, called 'A Feast of Joy for the Mind of Clear Intelligence,' was recorded in the form of notes by the learned Guṇabhadra. It was propagated by the ordinary Mati Kirti, and later written down by the learned one himself. Jaya yantu (May there be victory)! Auspicious!
