The five roots are, in order: the eye root, which is like extremely pure dust particles in the shape of a red Asoka flower; similarly, the ear root is like a cut, twisted barleycorn; the nose root is like two copper needles placed side by side; the tongue root is like two half-moons placed side by side, with a space of five horse-lengths in between that is not touched; the body root is like the skin of a Kalanda bird, except for hair and nails, it is extremely pure dust particles that pervade the entire body, both inside and out. The second is mental sensations; the third is mental perceptions; the fourth is the forty-nine mental events other than sensations and perceptions, and non-associated formations; the fifth is the six primary consciousnesses. The twelve sources are: form, because it is the object from which eye consciousness arises and develops, it is considered the source of form, and so on, up to the source of phenomena. The eye faculty, because it is the gate through which eye consciousness arises on its own object of form, is considered the source of the eye, and so on, up to the explanation of the mind faculty. Places and non-places are: that good causes produce happy results is a place, and that good causes produce suffering results is a non-place, and so on. Fourth, although the object is not separate from the previous three, the object is the general meaning, focusing on it mainly through analysis and meditation, with conceptual images when focusing; mainly through placement meditation, with non-conceptual images when focusing; when the object exhausts the general meaning and manifests, it is the ultimate focus of things; when this habit becomes more and more skilled, it is the focus of complete fulfillment of needs. If one wants to accomplish the Samadhi of Visualization, one should equally abide in the tranquility and coarseness of the upper and lower realms, and then gradually cultivate the nine desires. That is, when the mind cannot continuously focus on the object, first place the mind internally; then, when the mind can continuously focus on the object for a slightly longer time than before, the second time continuously abide; then, when the object exhausts the generality of sound and can only appear through the generality of meaning, the third time lift up and abide; then, by the power of special memory, when one can focus on a wider object than before, the fourth time approach and abide; then, by the power of special mindfulness, experience the joy of Samadhi... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fifth, Taming (དུལ་བར་བྱེད་པ་): From the previous state, through the power of special mindfulness, recognizing the faults of distraction, one can deliberately prevent distraction. Sixth, Pacifying (ཞི་བར་བྱེད་པ་): Through the power of special effort, one develops great joy in meditating on samadhi. Seventh, Thoroughly Pacifying (རྣམ་པར་ཞི་བར་བྱེད་པ་): The mind continuously abides without interruption by excitement or dullness. Eighth, Making One-Pointed (རྩེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་བྱེད་པ་): Without needing antidotes, samadhi naturally abides like a flowing river. Ninth, Placing in Equanimity (བཏང་སྙོམས་སུ་འཇོག་པ་): These nine desire realm mind-abidings should also be accomplished through the six powers and four mental engagements. Just as the first mind-abiding corresponds to the first power—the power of hearing; the second mind-abiding corresponds to the second power—the power of thinking. During these two stages, excitement and dullness arise particularly strongly, so the first mental engagement—the engaging with intensity—is applied. From the third mind-abiding to the fourth, corresponds to the third power—the power of mindfulness; from the fifth mind-abiding to the sixth, corresponds to the fourth power—the power of awareness; the seventh mind-abiding corresponds to the fifth power—the power of effort. In the seventh mind-abiding and below, excitement and dullness can interrupt samadhi, so the second mental engagement—the intermittent engagement—is applied. In the eighth mind-abiding, although there is a slight tendency for excitement and dullness to arise, they cannot interrupt samadhi, so the third mental engagement—the uninterrupted engagement—is applied. In the ninth mind-abiding, the sixth power—the power of complete familiarity—and the fourth mental engagement—the spontaneous accomplishment—are applied. After accomplishing these nine desire realm mind-abidings, as a sign of the accomplishment of pliancy (ཤིན་སྦྱངས,梵文:prasrabdhi), due to the wind of the four elements of the upper realms gathering at the crown of the head, a pliancy of mind arises that can endure focusing on the object. Then, due to the power of that wind at the crown of the head pervading the entire body, on the basis of the desire realm body, one can freely use the body of the upper realms, and a pliancy of body arises that is as light as cotton. Then, within the scope of body consciousness and mind consciousness, feelings of pleasure and joy arise, which disturb the state of mind; this is the bliss of pliancy. When this bliss cannot disturb the state of mind, special pliancy is accomplished. The one-pointedness that is seized by special pliancy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
