The Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD31: A Concise Explanation of Shamatha, Vipassana, Samatha, etc., Necessary for Beginners - A Delightful Feast for the Wise Mind 4-204 A Concise Explanation of Shamatha, Vipassana, Samatha, etc., Necessary for Beginners - A Delightful Feast for the Wise Mind A Concise Explanation of Shamatha, Vipassana, Samatha, etc., Necessary for Beginners - A Delightful Feast for the Wise Mind To the stainless, peaceful, supreme realm, May it always be manifest and realized, Simultaneously, the mind that sees all dharmas, Perfectly endowed, to that I bow. When meditating on the truth of reality, Making body and mind workable, The mind that dwells in peace, I will briefly explain the initial method of practice. Therefore, for those who seek to realize the true and accurate reality, the initial means of making body and mind workable is to commonly cultivate the mind of shamatha and vipassana. In general, samadhi concentration does not arise in people with unpleasant voices, eunuchs, etc. The mind of the first dhyana is not cultivated by those in the second dhyana, and the mind of the second dhyana is not cultivated by those in the third dhyana, because the superior does not seek the inferior. 4-205 Therefore, the physical basis for cultivating this is the people of the three continents and the six types of desire realm gods, etc. The method of how they cultivate is as follows: Go to a secluded place, abandon wooden beds with mesh frames that generate sinking of the mind, cushions with soft insides, and so on. On a solid square wooden bed, about one cubit in size, sit in the seven-point posture of Vairochana, and mentally equalize the calm and coarse aspects of the upper and lower realms. It is necessary to abandon the five faults and rely on the eight antidotes. The method of equalizing the calm and coarse aspects is to view the mind of the desire realm as coarse and faulty, and desire to abandon it; view the mind of the upper realms as peaceful and virtuous, and desire to attain it; generate such aspiration, and specifically focus on this calm and coarse aspect, thereby equalizing and abiding. The five faults to be abandoned are: the fault of hindering the arising of samadhi, which is laziness, where the mind does not abide on the object of focus but wanders elsewhere; second, forgetfulness, which is forgetting the object of focus; third, sinking of the mind, which is dullness, and excitement, which is indulging in desirable qualities, combined into one; fourth, when sinking or excitement arises, not diligently applying the antidote; fifth, when free from sinking and excitement, still diligently applying the antidote. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is it. The eight antidotes to be relied upon are: The first fault is difficult to abandon, therefore there are four antidotes for it. That is, faith in concentration, desire to strive for that meaning, diligence in rejoicing in it, and pliancy that allows the mind to be used at will on the object. These four. The second antidote is mindfulness that does not forget the object. The third antidote is awareness that examines whether the mind is well-placed or not. The fourth antidote is to strive to rely on the antidote when lethargy or excitement arises in the mind. The fifth antidote is that when the mind is free from lethargy and excitement, one does not make artificial efforts, but leaves the mind in its natural state. These are the eight. In general, there are four types of objects: objects for purifying afflictions, objects for purifying actions, objects for the skillful, and pervasive objects. The first is: the method of merely abandoning manifest afflictions, which is the division of quiescence and violence; and the method of abandoning even the seeds of afflictions, which is the way to focus on emptiness and the sixteen aspects of the four truths. These two are the ways of focusing on the object. The second is: the antidote to attachment is ugliness, the antidote to hatred is love, the antidote to ignorance is the twelve links of dependent origination, and the antidote to pride is contemplation on the division of elements. These four. Among them, the twelve links of dependent origination are: ignorance, formation, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, old age and death. The eighteen elements are: from the fact that form is the object of eye consciousness, it is established as the form element, to the fact that dharma is the object of mind consciousness, it is established as the dharma element, there are six types; the eye faculty is the dominant condition for the arising of eye consciousness in the object, therefore it is established as the eye element, to the fact that the mind faculty is the dominant condition for the arising of mind consciousness in the object, it is established as the mind element, there are six types; the main mind of eye consciousness sees the nature of form by its own power, therefore it is established as the eye consciousness element, to the fact that the main mind of mind consciousness sees the nature of dharma by its own power, it is established as the mind consciousness element, there are six types. There are eighteen elements in total. The third is: the five aggregates, the eighteen elements, the twelve sources, the twelve links of dependent origination, and what is and is not the place. Among them, the five aggregates are: the form aggregate, the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the formation aggregate, and the consciousness aggregate. These five aggregates. The first has five objects and the form of the five faculties, there are ten. Among them, the first five are successively the five objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
