NKL365 Teachings of Ngawang Kunga Lodro: The Establishment of the Vajra Bell 7-733 The Establishment of the Vajra Bell Om Svasti Siddham (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, May there be accomplishment and auspiciousness), I prostrate to the feet of the venerable Lama! Having paid homage to Heruka, who sports in the great bliss of union, I will write the establishment of the Vajra Bell, which symbolizes the meaning of method and wisdom. In general, the root or basis of all paths and attainments in the Secret Mantra Vajrayana lies in abiding by vows and precepts. Accordingly, each of the four great tantra classes has four different empowerment rituals as methods for obtaining vows and precepts that have not yet been obtained. In connection with this, the ways of keeping vows and precepts naturally differ slightly. In particular, if all the vows of the Anuttarayoga system are collected, they can be divided into three based on the stages of the individual's path: the initial vows, the vows of increasing stability, and so on. Among these three, the first includes four types: vows to be protected, vows to be consumed, vows to be practiced or relied upon, and vows not to be separated. The other three will be explained in their respective sections, but here I will specifically explain the vows not to be separated. In general, one should properly hold the characteristic painted images, scriptures, bells, drums, kapalas, khatvangas, containers, pouring vessels, rosaries, robes made of human skin from Naropa, tiger skin loincloths, tiger skin or coarse cloth cushions, six bone ornaments, and so on, as described in the tantras. 7-734 Among these, holding the Vajra Bell of vows is considered the most important of the vows not to be separated. Therefore, the explanation of its establishment is divided into two: the Vajra Bell of meaning, which is the signified, and the Vajra Bell of symbols, which is the signifier. The first is as stated in the tantra: 'The mind of enlightenment is the Vajra, wisdom is said to be the Bell.' Thus, the mind of enlightenment, endowed with skillful means and great compassion, is the Vajra of meaning, and emptiness, free from all extremes of elaboration, is the Bell of meaning. One should practice these two in union, never separating from them. General Explanation of the Symbolic Vajra Bell The second is divided into the general explanation of the symbolic Vajra Bell and the special explanation of the Vajra Bell of vows. The first is further divided into two establishments of the Vajra Bell. (The original text is incomplete here) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

《金刚空行续》(rdo rje mkha' 'gro'i le'u sum cu rtsa gcig pa)中说:'黄金等捶打是善的。'

Explanation of the Categories of Vajra First, the vajra has four aspects: the explanation of categories, materials, dimensions, and characteristics, as well as the explanation of purity or truth. The first is the classification of vajras: The nine-pointed vajra (rtse dgu pa) is the wisdom vajra, the five-pointed vajra (rtse lnga pa) is the samaya vajra, the three-pointed vajra (rtse gsum pa) is the karma vajra, the single-pointed vajra (rtse gcig pa) is the vajra that frightens the nagas, the bifurcated vajra is the wrathful vajra, and the secret ornamental vajra is the key explanation, totaling six types. Second, the materials of these vajras. The Vajra Dakini Tantra (rdo rje mkha' 'gro'i le'u sum cu rtsa gcig pa) states: 'Hammering gold and other materials is virtuous.' This means that 'other' includes silver, red sandalwood, and so on. Third, the explanation of dimensions and characteristics. Generally, there are three sizes: upper, middle, and lower, as well as the dimensions of each part. First, the overall dimensions: the tantra states that the smallest size is eight fingers, the middle size is sixteen fingers, and the largest size should not exceed twenty-two fingers, as exceeding this size would be too large. The 'Good Arm Sutra' (bzang po yongs bzung) states: 'From eight fingers to twenty-two fingers, the numbers are equal.' This means that the size should not exceed this range. Therefore, the smallest size is eight fingers, the middle size is sixteen fingers, and the largest size is twenty-two fingers. In addition, there is the saying 'increase or decrease by two fingers each time,' so one should understand the increase and decrease of every two fingers between eight and twenty-two fingers. Between eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, twenty, and twenty-two fingers, the size can be adjusted according to one's own wishes. Second, the dimensions of each part. The 'Sambuta Tantra' (sam bu Ta) states: 'Generally, the vajra is divided into three parts, one of which includes the center and the lotus petals.' The 'Vajra Dakini Tantra' states: 'One-third is given to the third part.' This means that regardless of whether the overall size of the vajra is upper, middle, or lower, one-third of its height is the central part, including the left and right lotuses. The other two-thirds are from the base to the tip of the right prong and from the base to the tip of the left prong. These three parts should be equal. The 'Vajra Dakini Tantra' states that the overall height is divided into three parts, and the measurement method is that the central part (i.e., the lotus) and the left and right vajra parts are equal and consistent in height. 'This is the general dimension of all vajras.' If divided more specifically, the 'Vajra Dakini Tantra' states: the lower center, the vajra, and the upper and central parts --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
