Ngawang Kunga Lodro's Teachings NKL69: Regulations for the Four Monasteries Regulations for the Four Monasteries, may it be auspicious! Regulations for the Four Monasteries. In general, regarding how the Dharma depends on the holders of the Dharma, etc., and how these arise from the Sutras, Vinaya, and Abhidharma, all the Sangha members are well aware of it, so there is no need to explain in detail. In particular, the happiness and well-being of Tibet largely depend on the purity of the four or six castes, etc., and the preservation of the customs and attire of the border regions. As in the great legal documents of Dharma King Songtsen Gampo and his ministers. At that time, the Dharma flourished, and the holders of the Dharma increased their teachings and practice. Like the time of strife, Tibet was like a special sun rising. However, due to the influence of bad karma, those noble individuals became even lower than ordinary people. All beings in Tibet were inclined and transformed towards the evil deeds of body, speech, and mind. Therefore, the Dharma, the holders of the Dharma, and the happiness and well-being of Tibet are completely different from before, with ups and downs. Knowledgeable and impartial people, when observing, will see that good and evil deeds are reflected in the mirror of karma. This is just a general historical situation. In particular, regarding our own tradition, starting from the lineage of the Sakya school, up to my (Ngawang Kunga Lodro's) ancestors, they were known for their pure lineage and noble virtues. Starting from the KLu wang brothers, they reached amazing heights in both politics and religion. From the five supreme masters to our own guide, their lineage deserved the name 'Ruler of the Dharma in the Land of Snows, Supreme Sakya.' However, their lineage also faced difficulties: Phagpa Rinpoche, Yeshe Jungne, Drogon Chagdor, etc., did not live long and passed away to pure lands. The great holder of the teachings took the form of seclusion in Manzi, and passed the position of abbot of the monastery to Uchen. Such an unfortunate period arrived. Later, due to the blessings of the Three Jewels, the great holder of the teachings returned to the monastery and managed it in a combination of politics and religion, thus opening a new auspicious period. Until Tishri Kunlo, their lineage was known as the lineage that ruled the entire region. With pure thoughts, they divided the Labrang (family) into four branches to continue the lineage. Although they made such efforts, the lineage of the four Labrangs, including the great scholars, ended with the first generation. After that, there was the lineage of the Rinchen Gangpa, such as Dawen Kunni. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sngags 'chang kun-dga' bkra)

Complete. Then, the lineage of Lhakhang Labrangpa, including Tishri Kunga Lekjung, was completed. Then, starting from Khenpo Nyima Pal, the lineage of Ducho Labrangpa has continued to the present, almost without interruption. 4-108 Regarding the great obstacles that occurred to these lineages, such as the gradual lack of descendants: Sakya Pandita (Sa-lo chen-po, the great Sakya master), saddened by the phenomena of the degenerate age, intended to pass into the pure land at the age of forty or so. Therefore, he enthroned a great mantra holder who was very young and entrusted him with the responsibility of reviving the teachings of this monastery from the age of seventeen. However, due to the harassment and life-threatening difficulties caused by enemies of the teachings such as Lha Dzongpa, he was inclined to become a solitary renunciate. However, because he could not bear to abandon the welfare of the teachings and beings of the snowy land, he was repeatedly requested by many to resume his responsibilities, and gradually the entire environment of the monastery was developed. However, due to frequent wars and other hardships, when a special vision arose at Paro Taktsang (Spa-gro stag-tshang, Tiger's Nest), he almost departed to the realm of the Dakinis without abandoning his physical body, but considering the future prosperity of the monastery and the young Jamyang brothers ('Jam-dbyangs sku-mched, Manjushri brothers), he decided to stay here for a few more years, and only after the Jamyang brothers had grown up did he demonstrate passing away. From that time onwards, the religious and political affairs of the monastery never reached the prosperity of the time of the uncle and nephew Dharma kings, but in order to benefit beings, the size of this monastery and its Sangha have not changed much. 4-109 The family lineage was very difficult to maintain. Yabje Bebai Sangye (Yab-rje sbas-pa'i sangs-rgyas, the venerable Hidden Buddha) had three sons, but although Garchen (Sgar-chen, the Great Encampment) and Kundrung (Sku-'bring, the Middle One) were of exceptional quality, they did not have much interest in religious and political affairs. Jamyang Ameshap (Jam-mgon a-mes zhabs), possessed the same qualities of scholarship, discipline, and virtue as the five supreme masters (Rje btsun gong-ma lnga), and contributed to both religious and political affairs. No matter how one looks at it, there was no one in the snowy land who surpassed him, as is clear to those of discerning intellect. This protector began to propagate the lineage from the age of twenty-five, but had no sons until he was over forty, so the family lineage was very difficult to maintain. In order to eliminate these obstacles, the image of the Rising Moon Mother (Zla shar gyi yum sgrogs) and twenty-five other important images were created, after which Jamyang Sonam Wangchuk ('Jam-dbyangs bsod-nams dbang-phyug) was born. In the year he turned nineteen, he was honored as the mantra holder Kunga Tashi (Sngags 'chang kun-dga' bkra) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
