Homage to the Lamas. The Opening the Door to the Excellent Tenets: It is crucial for a yogi who is accomplishing complete and perfect enlightenment to pacify all obstacles and hindrances on the path. To destroy these, there is the instruction of severing. Severing itself also has four maras, which must be subdued. There are four aspects to this: identifying the four maras, methods for taking the four maras as the path, demonstrating that knowing how to take them as the path means they are not maras, and practicing the Dharma of severing. First, there are four divisions of maras: maras with obstruction, maras without obstruction, maras of joy and elation, and maras of conceit. The nature of the maras: Maras with obstruction are things like fire, water, poison, weapons, wild animals, cliffs, and so on, which are objects appearing to the five senses. These are things with substance. Maras without obstruction are external maras like gods, demons, and people's harsh words, insults, shame, and disgust. Internal maras are afflictions, sickness, suffering, attachment, aversion, the eight worldly concerns, fear, anxiety, and so on, which are experiences of the mind, subtle and gross, without substance, but which consume the mind. Maras of joy and elation arise when, through practicing the instructions of severing, external things do not arise, internal sickness and suffering are pacified, power and blessings arise, diseases and leprosy are healed, imbalances of the elements and violent heart winds occur, confusion and thoughts arise, good reputation and fame arise, and vast internal and external qualities arise. One develops joy and elation at these, and one hopes that they will arise in the future. One practices severing while focusing on these things with desire, with joy, with elation, with benefit, and with result. Maras of conceit arise when, even though one goes to fearsome places like charnel grounds, empty valleys, remote monasteries, and so on, one is not harmed by obstacles. Why is this? Because the gods and lamas look upon me with their eyes, the Three Jewels protect me with their compassion, and the heroes and dakinis protect and guard me. If they could give, the demons would not be able to come; they would not be able to take, they would not be able to eat. They would turn back and go away. One practices severing with the thought that it is enough to do it like that.
