༄༅། །Instructions on the Essential Extraction of Tögal, Called "Heart's Refinement." From the Explanation of the One Hundred and Fourteen Instructions. Homage to Glorious Vajrasattva! The essential extraction of Tögal, the dark retreat instructions for establishing the foundation like the ocean, has three aspects: preliminaries, actual practice, and subsequent stages of experience and signs. First, the preliminaries: cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment. Offer a mandala. Make fervent supplications to the lama. Second, the actual practice: in a dark room, on a comfortable cushion, assume the posture of the Nirmanakaya. There are two aspects: establishing the foundation like the ocean and clarifying it. To establish the foundation, place the elbows on the knees. On the three fingers of both the right and left hands, visualize white Om (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城體:ओ,梵文羅馬擬音:oṃ,漢語字面意思:Om), red Ah (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城體:आ,梵文羅馬擬音:āḥ,漢語字面意思:Ah), and dark blue Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城體:हु,梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ,漢語字面意思:Hum). Press down on both eyeballs. First, the self-radiance of wisdom, light, and bindus will shimmer. Then, extend both hands outward and gaze without moving the eyeballs. The self-radiance of the five peaceful and wrathful families and the five wisdoms will be clear in the field of perception. The uncontaminated bindus, not established as objects of grasping, will be manifestly clear, inconceivable and inexpressible. Remaining in clarity is the state of the Dharmakaya. Remaining in emptiness is the state of the Dharmakaya. The state of emptiness and clarity inseparable is the state of the Dharmakaya. It is impossible to stray from the state of the Dharmakaya. Spontaneous perfection without conceptual thought. The true selflessness is suchness. In true reality, duality is not established as one. That way of abiding of body and wisdom, its essence is primordially pure, beyond words. Its nature is spontaneously perfect, without limitations or partiality. The essence of awareness and wisdom is the unobstructed radiance of awareness, self-illuminating outwardly. Look at the aggregation of impermanent and unreal phenomena. Look at the clarity of the five wisdoms. Like a rainbow, a water moon, a lamp of empty bindus, like the colors of a peacock's tail, wisdom dawns as the great breakthrough. There are three fields in which it dawns: the field of sensory illusion, the field of the self-radiance of the lamp of wisdom, and the field of the true nature of reality, primordial purity. First, the field of illusion: in the field of the eye, various forms are seen naturally.

That is, good and bad, virtuous and non-virtuous. Because of indulging in desirable qualities, it is a realm. Second, the realm of the self-radiance of the lamp is that light and bindus, and the assembly of body and wisdom, appear vividly in empty clarity with a colorful display. Third, the secret realm of the primordially pure dharmadhatu is that all dharmata is uncompounded, selfless, the luminosity of emptiness-essence, beyond the realm of expression, and cannot be determined by sound, measure, or reasoning. In short, it is the very wisdom of primordially pure awareness, the great source of body and wisdom, and so on. Relying on that lamp of empty bindu, in ultimate truth, it is the meaning of non-duality. It will definitely arise from that. What is its door? It appears in the realm of the senses, and it appears in the root of wisdom. The initial bindu of light is completely round, and its color is five. It appears in the nature of the five lights. The five lights appear as the essence of the five wisdoms. Experiences, warmth signs, and realization signs arise without desire. For example, like a precious jewel, without needing to seek qualities, it is spontaneously accomplished without conceptualization. Without needing to abandon faults, the experience of the self-nature lamp purifies itself without needing to abandon afflictions, showing non-duality as non-dual. It is the key to enjoying the essence of primordial purity, so although experiences, realization, and qualities are not desired, they arise naturally, like the magic of the sky, unpreventable and self-arising. Turning its face to the darkness, the clear appearance expands into the pure land of the sambhogakaya. Practicing in this way day and night without interruption, the three kayas appear naturally complete, and the five wisdoms are clearly pure. The essence, nature, and compassion are inseparable, and one becomes a buddha in this very life. That also requires looking straight ahead with a straight posture, pressing the top and bottom of the lamp with the thumb and index finger, the left and right, or dissolving from the top, and then looking without distraction. The wisdom of the awareness of the yogi, self and other, experiencing that, the inconceivable meaning of the dharmakaya and the realization of wisdom, will definitely be accomplished in this, without doubt. Practice in four or six sessions. This is the practice of entrusting the ocean to the salt flats. There are three oceans: the ocean of the door of conventional designation, the ocean of illustrative examples, and the vast ocean of the meaning of the reality of dharmata.
