Because it is a son, it is the skandha-mara. The afflictions are eighty-four thousand. If these are summarized, they are the five poisons and the three poisons. If these are further summarized, they are included in the mind that improperly considers the impure, unpleasant, selfless, and impermanent as pure, pleasant, self, and permanent. These afflictions, such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, are generated by this improper consideration of self. Having accumulated non-virtuous karma by being instigated by these afflictions, one is helplessly born and dies in this cycle of existence due to the power of karma. Therefore, that which causes death is the affliction-mara. The very nature of death is the Lord of Death mara. Roughly speaking, if there is birth, there is the nature of death, so sentient beings suffer and are harmed by dying helplessly. Subtly speaking, it is the impermanence of the nature of phenomena, changing moment by moment, and the nature of impermanence is the characteristic of suffering, so it is called the Lord of Death mara. The distraction of the Son of Gods mara, which obstructs the attainment of the deathless and peaceful state, is the conceptual thought that obstructs the path to liberation and omniscience, and that distracts the mind after external objects. Due to its power, like a body and its shadow, according to reason, it is the retinue headed by the evil demon Black Mara. According to mantra, the mara is Delightful Lord of Power, who, although a god of the form realm, is attached to the objects of desire. In the Tushita heaven, it exists in the form of a monastery rather than a city. The identification of the four maras, according to mantra: The mara with obstruction and the mara without obstruction, the joyful mara and the prideful mara, and that is also included in the prideful mara. Thus it is said. The mara with obstruction is: harm from external objects and sentient beings, such as fire, water, cliffs, and lightning strikes, and cruel sentient beings, such as enemies and thieves, poisonous snakes and wild animals, and the fear of flesh-eating demons, which harm the body and mind. The mara without obstruction is the inner afflictions, such as desire, hatred, and ignorance, the eighty-four thousand afflictions, which give all the suffering of cyclic existence. The joyful mara is when going to sacred places and solitary retreats, (thinking) my lama is different from other lamas, my teachings are different from other teachings.

Ah! My practice is different from others. Vajra brothers and sisters, rejoicing and exulting, thinking they are more superior than others. In short, to be particularly attached and cling to having gained a little of the inner warmth and power of samadhi is the demon of joy and exultation. The demon of pride is that the root of all those previous demons, the inner I, produces the clinging of pride, which is the conceptual thought of clinging to the five aggregates as self and mine. Therefore, if this is cut off, then all external demons will be cut off naturally without being cut off. For example, if the root of a tree is cut off, then all the branches and leaves will naturally fall. Therefore, the root of the four demons mentioned above all converge on the inner I, the demon of pride. Therefore, this is what needs to be cut off. The methods for cutting it off are twofold: cutting off with skillful means and cutting off with wisdom. The Hearers and Solitary Realizers, with their limited skillful means and wisdom, destroy the gross demons and attain the state of liberation, but the subtle body of the nature of the alaya consciousness of subtle ignorance, the uncontaminated karma, the four subtle demons such as inconceivable death are not destroyed. Bodhisattvas need to destroy all four subtle and gross demons. Vidyadharas who have entered the mantra path also need to destroy all four subtle and gross demons, but the methods by which these two destroy them are very different. Among them, the first is to cut off self-grasping with skillful means: from beginningless time, clinging to self has produced all the suffering up to the present, and if this is not abandoned now, then it will bring harm until the endless future. Therefore, one should understand the faults of clinging to self. The precious bodhicitta can attain the temporary heavenly realms, the qualities of the bodhisattva grounds, and all the qualities of the ultimate omniscient state. Therefore, after understanding the faults and qualities in this way, in order to generate the precious bodhicitta, one should cultivate the four immeasurables, the exchange of self and others, and cultivate bodhicitta until the bonds of selfishness and self-interest are not cut off from the root. One should regard all sentient beings as mothers and oneself as sons, and regard all sentient beings as the conditions for temporary and ultimate happiness, the basis of complete enjoyment, the body, and.
