Fifth, Accumulating Merit. Fifth, Accumulating Merit. The accumulation of merit that cuts through the four maras at once: Yogis who have nothing else to do but eat, sleep, excrete, and defecate abandon this life. Those who cannot accumulate merit through external resources by merely going to secluded mountains must abandon their attachment to the internal aggregates to accumulate merit. As the 'Compendium' says: 'Bodhisattvas with four causes, endowed with wisdom and power, are difficult for the four maras to overcome and cannot be moved. They abide in emptiness and do not abandon compassion. Acting as they speak, they are blessed by the Sugatas.' This verse encompasses all the essential points of the profound Chöd. The four maras refer to the external and internal maras to be cut. With emptiness and compassion, the mara of ego-grasping arrogance is cut with wisdom, and the two ways of cutting with skillful means. Alternatively, it shows the two ways of subduing with great compassion and overpowering with great wisdom. 'Acting as they speak' refers to all the actions of the profound Chöd practice, including the preliminary, main, and concluding practices, or the sequential vows. 'Blessed by the Sugatas' refers to all the maturing empowerments of the profound Chöd. However, these must be heard from a lama of the profound Chöd lineage. Here, only the visualization sequence of offering the body is not mentioned, and only a little meaning is explained. The four maras to be cut, according to the system of reasoning, are: the aggregates that cause death are the aggregate mara; the afflictions that cause death are the affliction mara; the nature of death itself is the Lord of Death mara; and the deva mara obstructs the attainment of the deathless, peaceful state. The so-called mara is not something with bared teeth and glaring eyes, but refers to all the sufferings of samsara and the things that obstruct the attainment of liberation and nirvana. In short, it is anything that harms or injures the body and mind. So, where do all the sufferings of samsara come from? If there were no internal five aggregates, then all suffering would have no place, basis, container, or support. But once this aggregate body is formed, it becomes the place, basis, container, and support for the arising of all suffering.
