Since sins and obscurations are what obstruct the arising of special realizations on the profound path, it is necessary to purify karmic obscurations primarily in the initial stages. \"Sins and obscurations\" is a general term for all obscurations, and there are four types: karmic obscurations, afflictive obscurations, cognitive obscurations, and habitual obscurations. First, karmic obscurations are of two types: natural transgressions and prescribed transgressions. Natural sins are those that are not related to the Buddha's precepts; the very nature of the act is sinful from the moment it is committed, such as taking a life. Prescribed transgressions are those that are not sinful if committed by ordinary people, but become sinful if committed by a fully ordained person, such as cutting green grass. Therefore, natural sins that are not related to the Buddha's precepts include the ten non-virtuous actions and the five heinous crimes, etc. An example of both a natural and prescribed transgression is the defeat of taking a life; the natural sin of taking a life and the prescribed transgression of defeat. A prescribed transgression alone is like cutting green grass; if an ordinary person cuts green grass, it is not sinful, but if a monk with vows cuts green grass, it becomes a downfall. There is no difference in the magnitude of the sin between an ordinary person actually killing an animal and a monk cutting green grass. Therefore, prescribed transgressions are all violations of the outer Pratimoksha vows, the inner Bodhisattva vows, and the secret Vajrayana samaya vows. The faults of transgressions become greater and greater. For example, if an ordinary person kills a louse, one sin of killing is incurred. If a Bodhisattva kills a louse, not only is the sin of killing incurred, but also the fault of not killing. If the fault of not killing arises, does it become an action of immediate retribution? It does not, because it is not the mother who gave birth to this life's body, so it does not become an action of immediate retribution. If a mantra practitioner kills a louse, on top of the sin of killing and the fault of not killing, there is also the sin of killing the deity Vajrasattva and the forty-two deities who are the collection of his awareness." } ] ============================================================

Since the sin of killing living beings arises, the sins increase from the former to the latter. Therefore, the transgressions of individual liberation (Pratimoksha) become the transgressions of a Bodhisattva, that is, they become faults in guarding the vows. Therefore, it is said that one should wear the round skirt of individual liberation. If it is not worn properly, it becomes a transgression. Violating the vows of a Bodhisattva becomes a root downfall. It also becomes a root downfall outside the teachings of the Sugatas in mantra. Therefore, opposing the naturally occurring downfalls and the associated downfalls are obscurations of karma, which obstruct the attainment of the status of gods and humans in higher realms. The obscuration of afflictions consists of the eighty-four thousand afflictions that cause all those actions. If summarized, they are the conceptualizations of the five poisons and the three poisons. If further summarized, they are reduced to the single conceptualization of improper attention. These obstruct the attainment of liberation, that is, the status of Hearers (Shravakas) and Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhas). The obscuration of knowledge is the conceptualization of clinging to the three spheres as truly existent. The obscuration of habitual tendencies, according to the Sutras, is the state of very subtle obscuration of knowledge. According to the Tantras, it is said to be the habitual tendencies of the transformation of the three appearances. Very subtle obscurations are the causes of the gross body that depends on the mind-nature body, or the habitual tendencies of the white essence. The cause of the gross speech is the habitual tendency of the red essence. The cause of the mind is the black path where the white and red essences gather, or the very subtle habitual tendencies of the movement of wind. These two obstruct the attainment of omniscience. Therefore, these obscurations specifically obstruct the attainment of higher realms, etc. In general, they obstruct the reality of all phenomena, that is, suchness. If such a reality is named, it is the nature of phenomena, suchness, thusness, the ultimate limit, the sphere of reality, the flawless nature of all phenomena, the essence of the Sugata, etc., which are common names in Sutra and Tantra. According to Secret Mantra, they are the Buddha of self-nature purity, the Buddha of essence primordial purity, the Buddha of the spontaneously accomplished ground. As stated in the Heruka Galpo Tantra: The basis of reality, the essence of self-nature, binds the superior Dharmakaya.
