20. There are two situations regarding water containing living beings and planting grass and trees. The first is: Due to desire, planting grass and leaves, etc., in water containing living beings for enjoyment, causing many creatures to die, therefore precepts were established to prevent others from losing faith. The second is: Knowingly enjoying water containing living beings. 21. Building monasteries or caves with two stories. Knowingly doing so. The first situation is: The Six Groups of monks built a monastery in one day, and the precept was established that night. The second is: Knowing there is a risk of rain, but not taking rain-sheltering measures, building more than three stories in one day. 22. From here onwards are the rules concerning nuns. Teaching the Dharma without appointment. From here onwards, there are ten precepts concerning nuns. The basis for the first of these has two origins: The Buddha told the nuns to have the elder monks teach them the Dharma. The Six Groups of monks, while teaching the Dharma, played with the nuns and touched their bodies, etc., which caused others to lose faith, and therefore the precept was established. The second is: Teaching the Dharma to nuns without being appointed as their teacher. 23. Even if appointed, teaching until sunset. The first situation is: Even if appointed, Ananda taught the nun Utpalavarna until sunset, causing the nun and her entourage to arrive in Shravasti after the city gates were closed, forcing them to stay outside. Robbers attempted to rob them, and the nun conjured an army, and although they were not robbed, the teacher was ridiculed by others, and therefore the precept was established. The second is: Teaching the Dharma to nuns after sunset in a dangerous place. 24. Teaching for the sake of food. The first situation is: When the venerable Ananda was teaching the Dharma to a nun, the nun offered a small amount of food, which Nanda could not tolerate, saying that Ananda was teaching the Dharma only for the sake of food, and therefore the precept was established. The second is: Jealousy and slander against the teacher of the nuns. 25. The offense of sewing clothes has two situations. The first is: Charka sewed many clothes made of hidden cloth, etc., for the nuns, which caused others to ridicule him, and therefore the precept was established. The second is: Sewing clothes for a nun who is not a relative. 26. Giving Dharma robes. The first situation is: A monk who had ordained from being a merchant gave his old wife

The second part is: a Bhikshuni asks a non-relative householder to give food to others. Thirty-first, regarding the downfall of eating food repeatedly, which is divided into two parts. The first part is: when the Teacher and his retinue were forcibly invited, the Six Groups of monks begged for food such as Asmi's burden from other places. Later, they enjoyed the begged food from the one who forcibly invited them, causing others to lose faith, so this precept was established. The second part is: taking two or three meals from a non-relative householder in one day and enjoying them. Thirty-second, in a place where heretics live, staying for more than one night and eating. The first part is: in a house on a ridge, a heretical renunciate lived, and the Six Groups of monks went there and first made the householder have faith by letting others use it. And faith arose. Sixty naked ascetics defeated him with the logic of sticks, thus establishing the rule against slandering others. The second is: staying more than one night in a place where non-Buddhist renunciants reside and consuming their food. The thirty-third is: the alms bowl. The first of "eating" is: the group of six monks in Sravasti forcibly took the dowry that was being carried for the daughter of a householder, causing her to be unable to marry, thus establishing the rule against causing others to lose faith. The second is: begging for and eating more than three bowls of food at one time from a householder who is not a relative. The thirty-fourth is eating food after eating, and the basis for abandoning eating is: the Teacher said that one should not eat abandoned food. But if one acts contrary to this, others will criticize, thus establishing the rule. The second is: after initially giving and receiving food, one abandons that food through thought and action, and without adding more, one enjoys that same food. The thirty-fifth is: lying to cause a downfall because of abandoned food. The first of these is: an elderly monk repeatedly committed offenses and confessed to the teacher. The elderly monk thought, "I must find a way to make this teacher confess offenses to me as well." So he said that the food abandoned by the teacher had not been increased, and offered it to the teacher. After the teacher had eaten, the elderly monk said, "Please return the abandoned food." The teacher said, "This will not cause me to fall, but it will cause you to fall." Therefore, the rule was established against causing others to lose faith. The second is: saying that abandoned food has been increased when it has not been, and deceiving other monks. The thirty-sixth is: gathering and eating inside a boundary without permission. The first of these is: when the Teacher was residing in Rajagrha, Devadatta and his retinue gathered together to eat in order to divide the Sangha, thus establishing the rule against causing others to lose faith. The second is: within a boundary, due to disagreement in thought, gathering separately from the general Sangha and enjoying food. The thirty-seventh is: eating at an improper time, after noon. The first of these is: the group of seventeen young men ate a little food that they had obtained in the afternoon after not finding any alms in the morning, thus establishing the rule against slandering others. The second is: eating suitable food from noon until dawn has not yet broken in one's own region. The thirty-eighth: hoarding.
