Thus it was named. After the Bodhisattva was born and seven days had passed, his mother, Queen Maya, passed away and was reborn as a god in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. This was not the Bodhisattva's fault, but because his mother's lifespan had ended, and it is the nature of all Bodhisattvas who are the last of their kind. Then the Shakyas deliberated and entrusted the young man to his aunt, Mahapajapati. Eight nurses were appointed to nurse him, be his playmates, wipe away his dirt, and care for him in their laps, making a total of thirty-two. Thus, the young man was raised. Then the king gathered the Shakyas and consulted with them, wondering whether the young man would become a universal monarch or renounce the world. At that time, the sage of the snowy mountains, the black ascetic, who possessed five kinds of clairvoyance, sensed this and, together with his nephew Mesi, went to Kapilavastu by means of his miraculous powers. He came before the young man and, having examined his marks, was amazed and saddened. He prostrated himself at his feet, circumambulated him, took him in his arms, wept, and sighed deeply. The king asked, 'Great sage, does this young man have any inauspicious marks?' The sage replied, 'I am not weeping for the sake of this young man. He has no inauspicious marks whatsoever. He will undoubtedly awaken to perfect enlightenment and turn the wheel of Dharma. I weep and sigh because I am old and will not see or hear of such a thing.' If this is as it appears in my treatises, he will not remain in the household, for he is fully endowed with the thirty-two major marks and the eighty minor marks of a great being.' Having said this, the king, hearing the sage's prophecy about the young man, rejoiced and the father bowed to the Bodhisattva's feet, saying, 'All the gods bow to you, and the sages will also make offerings to you. You are the object of worship for all the world, and I also bow to you.' Having said this, he honored the sage, and the sage returned to his own abode.

Then, that youth went to the temple. The gods also bowed and paid homage to him, so he was also known as the god of gods. Fourth, the deed of being skilled in crafts: In order to first learn writing from the friend of all writing teachers, the Shakya boys and girls went with tens of thousands of retinues. The prince asked the writing teacher: 'Venerable teacher, which of the sixty-four scripts, such as the Brahma script or the Kharosthi script, should be learned?' The friend of all teachers was amazed and turned pale, saying: 'Sentient beings are pure, how wonderful! Even having studied all the treatises, in order to follow the world, they go to study writing. The names of any scripts, I have never known, even though he is proficient in them, he goes to study writing.' He said this. At that time, thirty-two thousand children gradually matured into enlightenment. Then, in the garden at the end of the farmland, he remained in equipoise in the four dhyanas under the shade of the Jambudvipa tree. Five non-Buddhist hermits with magical powers and clairvoyance were unable to perform miracles, and they also praised the Bodhisattva with many verses. At that time, when the shadows of other trees moved, but the shadow of the Jambudvipa tree did not move, all beings were amazed, and the father also became very devoted, saying: 'When the Sage was born, and when he meditated with light, the guide twice in this way, Protector, I prostrate to your feet.' He prostrated in this way. Fifth, the deed of playing with the retinue of consorts: Then, the Shakya elders reported to King Suddhodana: 'If this youth renounces from home to homelessness, he will become a Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha. If he does not renounce from home, he will become a Chakravartin king who conquers the four directions, so consorts should be taken for his sake.' After they urged this, the father king requested the prince to take a wife. The prince replied: 'I will answer after seven years.' He thought to himself: 'I have thoroughly understood the faults of desire.'

Strife and resentment are the root of sorrow and suffering, Like the frightening leaves of poison. Like fire, and like the edge of a sword. I do not desire the merits of desire, I am not for gatherings of women and beauties, To pacify the mind with the bliss of meditation and samadhi, I shall dwell in the silent forest. Thinking thus in his heart. He spoke many faults condemning desire, and because it was not granted, he earnestly requested again. The Bodhisattva, with skillful means and great compassion, thought that in order to learn the liberation of renouncing consorts and ordaining as practiced by the Buddhas of the past, he spoke these verses: The lotus grows from mud and filth, The king receives offerings from among the people. When the Bodhisattva obtains excellent retinue, Then he subdues the bonds of hundreds of millions of beings. All the Bodhisattvas or many wise ones of the past, They all attended to consorts, sons, and servants, Yet they were not attached to desire, and the bliss of meditation did not diminish, I too shall emulate them and learn these qualities. If there is no conduct, merit, and truthful speech, Any ordinary woman is not suitable for me. Whoever can truly delight my heart, Prudence, appearance, age, and pure lineage are appropriate. Therefore, write the qualities in verses, If there is such a woman, please tell me. Do not bind ordinary people, I do not need them. If there is one with these qualities, please grant her to me. Even if young and beautiful, yet not arrogant in beauty, Like loving brothers and sisters, with a loving heart, Delighting in generosity, with the giving manner of ascetics and Brahmins, If there is such a woman, father, please give her to me. Without pride, arrogance, and hatred, Abandoning deceit, jealousy, and trickery, with an upright character, Even in dreams, not attached to other men, My husband is content, always guarding vows, with chastity, Not arrogant, not licentious, able to endure dual suffering, Without pride, free from arrogance, like a servant. Not attached to sound, smell, and taste, nor attached to alcohol, Without desire, without greed, content with one's own wealth, Truthfully

After requesting his father in this way, the father wrote down the virtues of a woman on paper and gave it to the Brahmin priests, saying: "This young man is not seeking a wife for the sake of lineage, but for the sake of virtue, so send you to find a woman who possesses the above virtues." They traveled all over Kapilavastu, saying: "Daughters of Kshatriyas and Brahmins, Daughters of royal lineage and commoners, Whoever has these virtues, Come here!" Searching as the father had said, but they could not find one. They came to the house of Shakya the club-bearer, and saw a beautiful and charming girl named Shakya Earth-Protector. The Brahmin asked, "What do you need?" The Brahmin said: "The son of King Suddhodana, with an extremely handsome appearance, Endowed with the thirty-two marks, possessing merit and splendor. He has written down the virtues of women, Whoever has these virtues is fit to be his wife." Having said this, he handed the letter to the girl. After the girl read the letter, she said with a smile: "Brahmin, I possess all these virtues. The one with these qualities is my husband. If the young man is willing, please do not delay." Even ordinary people would participate in this. She said this. They reported the matter to the king, and the king thought: Most women, even if they do not have virtues, will admit that they do. "I will give him the woman he likes." So he said, "In seven days, all the women come to the assembly hall! Prepare all the things that the young man likes!
