One should cultivate compassion that wishes to be separated from the cause and effect of suffering, and loving-kindness that wishes to have the cause and effect of happiness. In short, one should take the suffering of hot and cold hells upon oneself and meditate, confessing the accumulation of evil deeds that cause one to be born there, and regard all beings born there as one's own parents, cultivate compassion, and beseech the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and pray earnestly. For those who create the cause of being born in hell, one should also cultivate loving-kindness and compassion as described above, and recite aspiration prayers, etc. The cause of being born in the cold hells is taking Dharma banners, etc., and stripping clothes from parents and others. The result of the cold hells is that all the ground and environment are in the midst of snow mountains and hailstones, with blizzards raging in all directions, without the light of the sun and moon, etc., in great darkness, the body is very fragile, unbearable to the touch, naked and unclothed, the suffering below is more intense than above, and due to extreme cold, blisters appear on the body, called the Blister Hell. The blisters burst and fester, called the Burst Blister Hell. Groaning in pain, they utter "Achu, achu." Because the voice is hoarse, they utter long cries. The teeth chatter, making a clattering sound. The outer skin turns blue and cracks like a four-petaled blue lotus. Bluish-red flesh emerges and cracks into eight petals like a lotus. Then it turns dark red and cracks into a hundred or a thousand petals, like a huge lotus, and many iron-beaked worms enter the wounds and devour them, suffering endless pain. The difference in lifespan is that if eighty bushels of sesame seeds are filled with Magadha measures, and one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years until they are exhausted, then that is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The Burst Blister Hell and the subsequent hells are twenty times longer than the previous ones, and they are extremely weak and suffering in such cold.

May all sentient beings in the hell realms be free from suffering. Through the power of my compassion and virtue, may the light of desirable fire and sun melt away ice and snow mountains without remainder, transforming the hell realms into a heavenly realm, where they may attain great happiness of warmth, gentleness, and vastness. The hot hells, which are the result of causes such as hatred, have a foundation and interior that are entirely of the nature of molten iron. Flames blaze fiercely, sparks fly in all directions, and the fire of the reviving hell is hotter than the fire that destroys the eon. Moreover, the lower hells are seven or four times hotter than the ones above. Regarding the differences in bodies, the *Dran Nyer* says, "The body of one who has committed the five inexpiable sins is five cubits long." The *Great Nirvana Sutra* says, "The body of one who has committed the eight inexpiable sins is eighty thousand cubits long." The *Ratnavali* says, "Even the tongue of one who has slandered the Great Vehicle is three cubits long." The young, tender beings who are reborn in the Reviving Hell, unbearable to touch, find sharp weapons in their hands and strike each other until they faint and fall. Then, a voice comes from the sky saying, "May you be revived!" Or, a cold wind arises and they are revived again, experiencing unbearable suffering as before. In the Black Line Hell, the hell guardians draw eight or sixteen black lines on the bodies and saw them apart with burning saws, causing suffering. In the Crushing Hell, they are crushed between great iron mountains with faces of rams and sheep, or crushed in iron mortars, causing suffering. In the Howling Hell, they are burned in a burning iron house without doors, causing suffering. In the Great Howling Hell, they are burned in two burning iron houses without doors, one after the other, causing suffering. In the Hot Hell, a burning iron skewer is thrust from the anus to the crown of the head, and fire blazes from the mouth, nose, and all the pores of the skin, causing suffering. In the Very Hot Hell, a burning, three-pronged iron skewer is thrust from the anus and soles of the feet to the crown of the head and both shoulders, and fire blazes from the sense organs and other places. The body is wrapped in burning iron sheets, causing suffering. The Unrelenting Hell is filled with burning iron coals.

The fiercely burning flames, with body and fire indistinguishable, appearing only as a mass of fire, extremely weakened, able only to utter sounds, merely manifesting as sentient beings, and so on, will experience immeasurable suffering. Regarding lifespan, the Four Great Kings have a lifespan of five hundred years, with fifty years as one day, the upper four gradually doubling, the Paranirmita-vasavartins have a lifespan of sixteen thousand years, with sixteen hundred years as one day, based on this, the Resuscitated ones have a lifespan of five hundred years, with the lifespan of the Four Great Kings as one day, the Heat-afflicted ones have a lifespan of sixteen thousand great years, with the lifespan of the Paranirmita-vasavartins as one day, the Very Heat-afflicted ones have a lifespan of half an intermediate kalpa, and the Great Torment ones have a lifespan of one intermediate kalpa, during which they will continuously experience intense suffering. For these hot hells, may the great clouds of aspiration and prayer of the Bodhisattvas, that is, the Bodhisattvas, give rise to abundant and limitless rains like a great ocean from the sky, may these rains free the hot hell beings, who are extremely weakened and suffering from the heat, from all suffering, and may they always be cool, that is, may they possess the happiness of coolness and gentleness! There are sixteen neighboring hells, namely: dung-filled mire, corpse-filled mire, the plain of upright hairs, the forest of sword leaves, the sword-blade forest, and the silk-cotton tree, these three are combined into one because of their similar shapes, and the river of ashes, these four hells are located in each of the four directions of all eight hot hells, with four in each direction, so there are sixteen in total. Escaping from the hellfire, seeing a green forest from afar, chasing after the shade, they are chased and devoured by dogs and the like, and the terrifying forest of sword leaves with sharp blades, cutting the body and causing suffering, may that terrifying forest of sword leaves, now by the power of my virtue, become for those hell beings a sight of the city of the Thirty-three, with gardens of various vehicles in the east, mixed gardens in the south, joyful gardens in the west, and so on, like the pleasure gardens of Indra, the lord of the gods, becoming a delightful paradise

May it be filled with joy and perfection. The main cause and effect of engaging in sexual misconduct and other actions is the so-called "Shalmali Mountain," where there is a tree called the "Shalmali Tree" with sixteen-finger-long iron thorns. There is a dog, its body as large as a mountain, its voice as loud as thunder, its teeth as sharp as snow mountains, its tongue flickering like red copper, its tail as sharp as a saw, chasing after and piercing with thorns, devouring from head to toe. Seeing that on the summit of that mountain, a friend who was previously very happy and sad was calling out, I went there, only to be pecked at by crows and vultures, their eyes gouged out, their tongues cut off, and suffering. At the summit, iron men and women embrace and bind, causing the lungs and heart to protrude. The head is placed in the mouth and chewed, causing grayish-white brain matter to flow from the gaps in the cheeks. Again, calling out from the root and so on, suffering as before. With compassion that desires liberation, may that tree also transform from a tree that gathers everything into a wish-fulfilling tree that fulfills needs and desires in accordance with the Dharma, becoming a place filled with enjoyment and perfection, this is the loving-kindness that desires to possess. Similarly, the main cause and effect of desire is, upon seeing a river, going there, only to fall into a great swamp of rotting flesh and suffer. The main cause and effect of hatred is, upon seeing a shadow as black as ink, going there happily, only to fall into a pit of embers and suffer. May one be free from these two sufferings, becoming clear and cool, filled with the fragrance, taste, and potency of the five delightful medicinal substances. Furthermore, for the temporary hells, may those who suffer in the forms of doors, pillars, stoves, ropes, and so on, also be free from these sufferings and attain happiness. May delightful sapphire birds, mandarin ducks, swans, and partridges, and other kinds of birds, with beautiful feathers as white as tombs and as golden as gold, fully display their beauty, emit very melodious sounds, joyfully fly, leap, sway, and perform various dances, making all the hellish places beautiful and delightful. May lakes filled with fragrant lotuses and utpala flowers, possessing various colors, and endowed with eight qualities, refresh the hellish regions.
