Just as smoke and the like cannot change space, neither can defilement and non-defilement change (the nature of reality). The fleeting stains that can be removed, which are encompassed by the all-pervasive defilement of afflictions, the all-pervasive defilement of karma, and the all-pervasive defilement of birth, arising from the non-veridical clinging to conceptual thoughts and from improper attention, such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, cannot cause the nature of reality to be perpetually and pervasively defiled, because it is naturally pure. Third, there are two parts: summarizing the way of being free from birth and destruction, and summarizing the way of destruction. First: By karma and afflictions, water and the like, this is not manifestly accomplished; the fire of death, disease, and old age, even if unbearable, will not burn it. As it is said, this luminous realm of the nature of mind is not manifestly accomplished or produced by the collection of water of karma and afflictions, or by the wind of improper attention. The fire of death at the end of time, the fire of disease in hell, and the unbearable ordinary fire of old age will not burn or destroy it, because it is an unconditioned nature that does not change. Second: The fire of the end of time, hell, and the ordinary, the three fires of death, disease, and old age, should be known to be similar in sequence. As it is said, the three fires of the end of time, hell, and the ordinary should be known to be similar in sequence to the three fires of death, disease, and old age. Just as the fire of the end of time destroys the outer world, the fire of death destroys the aggregates of this life. Just as the fire of hell produces suffering, the fire of disease also produces suffering. Just as the ordinary fire ripens actions, the fire of old age also ripens the aggregates. Second, the meaning of the impure not turning into the state of purity is divided into two: actually explaining the meaning of not being transformed by birth and the like, and identifying the qualities of the Buddha's sons on the ten grounds. First, there are two parts: the way in which it does not change but appears to change, and explaining that meaning in detail. First: Liberated from birth, death, sickness, and old age, realizing the nature of this as it is, although free from the poverty of birth and the like, yet by that cause, the wise towards

They rely on it to generate compassion. It is said that noble Bodhisattvas are liberated from birth, which is the formation of new aggregates, and death, which is the cessation of continuity, and sickness, which generates suffering, and old age, which is the constant change. Because they have directly realized the nature or reality of the Tathagatagarbha Dharmadhatu as it is. From the power of karma and afflictions, they are also free from the poverty and suffering of birth, etc., and are pure and unchanging. Even so, because of the cause of realizing the Dharmadhatu as it is, the wise Bodhisattvas generate great compassion and abide for the sake of beings who have not realized it in this way, desiring to free them from all suffering. For the sake of others, by the power of aspiration and so on, they deliberately take birth in existence, and in order to avert the clinging to permanence, they rely on death, sickness, and old age, etc., and abide in samsara. Therefore, in the appearance to others, they also show themselves to be impure and subject to change. The second part has two points: the reason for not being changed by suffering, and the reason for appearing to change from compassion. The first point is: The noble ones have completely abandoned death and sickness, and the root of the suffering of old age. Born from the power of karma and afflictions, because they do not have that, they do not have that either. It is said that the noble Bodhisattva assembly has completely abandoned the suffering of involuntary death, sickness, and old age from the root. Because their cause is improper attention, and karma and afflictions, and by their power, birth in samsara. And for the Bodhisattva, because there are no those causes, there is also no result of suffering change. The second point is: Because of seeing correctly as it is, they have transcended all things such as birth, but with the nature of compassion, they show birth, death, old age, and sickness. It is said that the noble sons of the conquerors, because they have directly seen the Dharmadhatu as it is, unborn and unchanging, have transcended and liberated themselves from the suffering of involuntary birth, etc., in samsara. However, they generate great compassion for sentient beings who have not realized it in this way.
