The essence of the Tathāgatagarbha, like the realm of space, although it is the basis of all things, does not abide in anything. Similarly, although it is the basis of all sudden occurrences, its own nature does not depend on any basis, nor does it exist anywhere. Fourth: Inappropriate attention abides in the nature of mind. Through inappropriate attention, karma and afflictions are distinguished. From the water of karma and afflictions, the aggregates, sense bases, and elements arise. Like their destruction and arising, it is the transformation of birth and death. As it is said, just as the wind mandala abides in space, inappropriate attention, the conceptual thought, obscures the luminous nature of mind. Just as wind relies on water, inappropriate attention opens the opportunity to generate karma and afflictions. Just as stirring the water mandala produces the earth, from karma and afflictions, which are like water, arise the aggregates, sense bases, and elements that are tainted and included in suffering. Therefore, just as the destruction and arising of the vessel world, the tainted aggregates, elements, and sense bases undergo the transformation of birth and death. The second part has two points: the essence is without birth and death, and the way of purification from defilements. The first point is: The nature of mind is like space, like a realm without cause or condition, without accumulation, without birth, and without destruction or abiding. As it is said, the luminous nature of mind, which is the Dharmadhātu, like the unconditioned realm of space, does not depend on the immediate cause, nor does it depend on the cooperating condition, therefore it does not depend on their accumulation. Therefore, the initial birth, the final destruction, and the intermediate abiding do not exist, so it is never changed by the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena. The second point is: The nature of mind is luminous, unchanging like that of space. From unreal thoughts arise desire and so on. Sudden defilements do not pollute it. As it is said, the luminous nature of mind of beings, which is the Tathāgatagarbha, is like the nature of space, clouds
