First, the connection of the relation is declared. First, the connection of the relation is declared. In order to distinguish between meaningful and meaningless, the chapter on self-interest is explained. It is explained that the valid means of distinguishing between meaningful and meaningless is established. The remaining two chapters that are appropriate are explained. The first has three parts: first, the connection of the relation is declared; in the middle, the text of the chapter itself is explained; and finally, the conclusion is summarized by name. The first is: If this treatise is written as a commentary on the Compendium, then why is it that it does not agree with the order of the chapters and the inference for oneself is explained first? In the self-commentary of four thousand five hundred verses, it is said: "Distinguishing between meaningful and meaningless depends on inference, and it is explained in order to establish it with inverted cognition." There are two aspects to this meaning: refutation and establishment. The first is: Some panditas think that meaning is beneficial, and meaninglessness is not beneficial. Distinguishing between them is to accept or reject the two. This depends on inference, so inference is explained first, so says Shakya Blo. Distinguishing it depends only on inference, is this a non-implicative determination? It depends only on inference, is this an other-implicative determination? According to the former, distinguishing it also depends on direct perception, and direct perception should also be explained first. According to the latter, it is not reasonable, because distinguishing it also depends on direct perception. If it is said that only distinguishing it depends on inference, then this is also unreasonable, because distinguishing the objects of benefit, harm, intermediate, and abandonment also depends on inference, after refuting in this way. For one's own system, the definition and classification of valid means as explained by Dignāga are meaningful, because they are in accordance with reason. The definition and classification of valid means as explained by outsiders are meaningless, because they are not in accordance with reason. Distinguishing them depends only on inference, therefore inference is explained first, as Dharmakīrti said in the connection of the second chapter, the reason why the teacher explained the treatise on the definition of valid means is after establishing inference. There is also something to examine here, the inference for oneself is what Dignāga said.

Regarding the definition of valid cognition (pramāṇa) and the question of whether it belongs to the category of classification. If it does not belong, then valid cognition cannot be determined as being of two types, perception and inference, and there would be the fault of valid cognition becoming only perception. If it does belong, then before the inference for oneself, it would also be necessary to explain the inference for oneself, because distinguishing them depends on inference, and it is necessary to accept the subject, reason, and example. The former view is also unreasonable, because in the Pramāṇavārttika it says that obtaining and abandoning beneficial and non-beneficial things must be preceded by correct knowledge. Although it seems that these two have the same meaning, they are actually not the same. What is said in the Pramāṇavārttika is that the object of acceptance and rejection of valid cognition, which is commonly referred to, is the existence or non-existence of self-characteristics. And the correct knowledge that precedes it is both perception and inference, not just inference. Otherwise, if the meaning is the same, then at the beginning of all chapters, it would be appropriate to explain the chapter on correct knowledge alone. The thought of the gods is that because the treatise on the definition of valid cognition is the cause, the first to be explained is the benefit for oneself. The so-called treatise on the definition of valid cognition seems to be referring only to the chapter on perception in the Sutra. Because at the end of the third chapter, the teacher says that the cause for explaining the treatise on the definition of valid cognition is inference. And at the beginning of the treatise, the explanation of the first half of the verse of homage has already been shown in the first chapter. Because that was done to explain the definition of valid cognition, it is said that "the two to be measured" and so on. And regarding valid cognition and the treatise on its definition, he said that he saw four wrong conceptions, and these four wrong conceptions are said to be complete from the wrong conception about number to the wrong conception about result. The meaning of the chapter on perception being the treatise on the definition of valid cognition is also because by showing the four, such as number, the meaning of the definition of valid cognition is completely shown. In the commentary it says: If it is said that when showing the definition of valid cognition, showing number and so on is meaningless, then it is not so, because it is the meaning of a completely pure definition. Therefore, although the fault of needing to explain inference before inference does not occur here, it is also the same in the Compendium of Valid Cognition and the Pramāṇaviniścaya.
