If something actually manifests but one doesn't know how to express it, then ask while teaching. At that time, if it's artificial or a misunderstanding, one can't grasp the word, so it will change. If it's real, whether it's right or wrong, one will say, "This kind of thing happened to me." Ask well, and introduce it by distinguishing from where it arises. If you don't distinguish whether it arises or not and introduce everything, you'll become a slick person with some Dharma knowledge. Later, it will even harm others' meditation. There's a flaw in the principle here, so order him to bring a key point from the scriptures and send him away. The forty-fifth Dharma talk. Furthermore, if one says that when looking at non-thought, there's nothing other than that state, then it means higher seeing hasn't arisen, so extend it for a few more days and have him continue to look. Furthermore, if one says that one is in a state of emptiness where nothing can be identified, then it means one has only seen one aspect and hasn't seen everything. So, without distraction, have him determine whether it's a state of pure emptiness or what kind of emptiness it is, and have him continue to look. In the clear, naked awareness where nothing can be identified, there's not even the thought of "This is something unseen." If one says that there's a certainty even though one doesn't know what it is, or that the mind remains in a state of emptiness, and there's a clear, vivid feeling that one can experience oneself but can't express in words, then ask repeatedly. If it's a misunderstanding, one can't grasp it. If it's an experience, it won't change. Having properly determined it and abiding in it means higher seeing has arisen. Furthermore, if one babbles when asked to identify and search for where the mind arises and where it ceases, it's a sign of not understanding. Furthermore, if one says there's nothing that arises and nothing that ceases, then ask if the thought "It's like this" arose at that time. If he says it did, then have him look at that very thought of "It's like this." If one says that with or without the thought of "It's like this," there's also a knowing that there's no arising or ceasing, then it means higher seeing has arisen in non-thought, so introduce it as the Dharmakaya, the union of awareness and emptiness. Furthermore, if one sweetly says that there's no arising or ceasing and that one is in emptiness when asked to look at thoughts, it's a lie. If one says that by looking at the thought, it disappears without a trace, then it means a little higher seeing has arisen. Furthermore, if one says that as soon as a thought arises, it appears without identification, then that

Ask: Will the thought "I am not grasping anything" arise? If they say "yes," that is within the realm of understanding. If they say that without such a thought, in a nonchalant, non-clinging way, without grasping anything, appearance and liberation occur simultaneously, then vipashyana has arisen in their thoughts. This is introduced as the dharmakaya of luminosity and emptiness united. Again, when allowing the five sense faculties to perceive objects such as forms, if they say, "The object is clearly present over there," then ask: Is there a sound of "clearly present" there, or not? If they say "yes," then look at that sound of "yes." If there is no such thought, and the object is also not obstructed, but is open, and the mind that is looking is also relaxed in a non-clinging, nonchalant way, if they say that these two seem to be without difference, and there is no thought of "clearly present," then vipashyana has arisen in appearance. This is introduced as the dharmakaya of appearance and emptiness united. These are methods for seeking the wisdom of vipashyana on the basis of shamatha, which is to look at the nature of meditation, which is called self-awareness. Seeing the nature of mind through looking is self-awareness. The great bliss of the wisdom of self-awareness itself is mahamudra. Moreover, if you do not look at the nature of meditation, you will not see the nature of mind. If you do not see that, you will not recognize the wisdom of self-awareness. If you do not recognize that, you will not be able to realize the great bliss of the wisdom of vipashyana, therefore looking at the mind is very important. Also, how the vision arose for them, do not just stay at the level of understanding, but make sure it is definitely integrated into their mindstream, and then have them meditate. Ask them: Is the mind blissful and clear? Or clear and bright? Or open, with something trustworthy from deep within, but which cannot be expressed in words? If they say that when looking at it, there seems to be nothing to grasp, then they have recognized it. If they say that they cannot come to one-pointedness, that is within the realm of understanding, therefore an experience that transcends understanding and truly integrates into the mindstream is needed. Do not do too many other explanations, but meditate as I have taught, until the above experiences and realizations arise, and after they arise, then introduce it. When introducing it, it is not necessary to show all of these ways that appear like the stripes of a snake, but according to the way it appears, introduce it in accordance with whichever of the above points its nature corresponds to, and that is the sign of recognition. Finished.
