When engaging in the actual practice, Vipassana. When engaging in the actual practice, Vipassana. Secondly, regarding Vipassana: Observing the nature of the mind of reality, cutting off the root, and introducing it by establishing it in the emptiness of awareness. Firstly: Briefly summarize the preliminary practices, and do not forget the objects of Shamatha. Initially, the method of relaxing and settling the mind in its natural state is to settle it like a clear, bright, and radiant sun free from clouds. Knowing the arising feelings in the mind, settle it like water and waves, having clarity but without clinging, settle it like a young child seeing a temple. In this state, how does your mind abide, what is the nature of its abiding? What color is it? What is its shape and form? Is it substantial or non-substantial? Where did it first come from? Where does it abide now? Where will it ultimately cease? Does it abide in your body, or in names, inner and outer objects, and the six realms of beings? Examine and contemplate what form it takes. It is good if you can find the color, shape, and nature to be such and such. If you cannot find it, do not be discouraged, but repeatedly observe with great effort. Fortieth Dharma session, thirty-third object of focus. In that state of abiding, ask what the nature of the mind is like. If they say that they only abide and cannot know what the nature of the mind is like, then ask, "Is that awareness an unpredicted awareness, a dark and obscure one? Or is it a clear, bright, and naked one?" If they say it is like the latter, then they have seen the nature of the mind. If they say it is like the former, then have them cultivate it again. Also, ask what the difference is between the previous state of karma and now. If they say that the previous state of mind was a dull appearance of awareness, dimmed and obscured, and they were attached to it, devoid of the previous effort, unable to distinguish the subtle details of objects, and not seeing the nature of awareness, abiding thickly, like awareness put into a hole, or like a bee stuck to honey, abiding in a state where awareness is not clear. But this time, the mind is abiding clearly, purely, and distinctly, free from grasping. If they say so, then they have seen a glimpse of the nature of the mind. If they say there is no difference from before, then it can only suppress afflictions, but not for accomplishing enlightenment.

Therefore, it is advised that in order to generate the wisdom of insight in the continuum, one should diligently practice until it arises. Also, if you want to find the abiding, let the mind relax. This thing called "mind," sometimes thinking of this, sometimes thinking of that, sometimes not flowing, sometimes flowing, this scattered mind, in what kind of color does it scatter? What kind of shape? In what kind of nature does it scatter? Does it abide in the object of eye consciousness, or does it abide in the objects of the five senses, hair, smell, taste, touch? Or, is it from the crown of one's head to the soles of one's feet, between the senses, mind, limbs, body radiance, hair, and the end of the skin? Or, the outer five elements, the six realms of beings, etc., in what form does it scatter? Is the nature of that mind existent, or non-existent, or both, or neither, in what form does it scatter and abide? Examine it carefully. The forty-first Dharma assembly, the thirty-fourth contemplation. Second, cutting off the root: When searching like this, if you don't find it, then again, as before, diligently search for that mind. When searching like this, if you don't find it, then how does the searcher abide? What is the difference between the mind that was previously left to its own devices and the mind that is now being examined? How are the place of origin, the place of dwelling, and the place of cessation of that mind? After careful observation, search for it. Again, let the mind change, identify one birth and two births, and ask whether the abider and the mover are one or not one. If they say the two are one, then confirm that they are one. For example, if a couple has one child, when the child is with the mother, they are not with the father, and when they are with the father, they are not with the mother, just like sending messages back and forth, the mind also does not move when it abides, and does not abide when it moves. The subject of abiding and moving is the same mind, so it must be confirmed that abiding and moving are one. Some people, although they have seen the nature of the mind, cannot express it, cannot speak Buddhist terminology, because their understanding of the experience is not thorough, and they need to be observed and questioned. Some people, although they have not generated experience in their continuum, can speak Buddhist terminology without confusion, for these people, the Buddhist terminology must be distinguished and well restrained, because the Buddhist terminology of understanding cannot be satisfied, and will come out far away. For these people, measure them with your own experience, and guide them well with skillful means. The forty-second Dharma assembly, the thirty-fifth contemplation. Furthermore, the eleven kinds of attention
