115 115 Now, let us recount the questions and answers of the yogi Chö Yung in the presence of Lord Gampopa. In that answer, as it is said: 'When asked whether an old man who has had essence arise for a long time still has profits and questions, he replied: "There are no questions, and there is nothing to extract as profit. They just come to me, make some noise, and leave."' The meaning of this is: Essence refers to not seeing any essence of things, and cutting off the proliferation of delusion regarding the characteristics of things. Therefore, the proliferation of things and phenomena ceases in the mind of the knowable and the knower. And since the mind itself is liberated from the activity of grasping and apprehending any object or subject, the mind itself is devoid of the function of the characteristic of mind, and seeing essence or essence arising is spoken of as transcending the mind. However, by knowing essence, there is nothing new to be realized as an object of knowledge. Therefore, there is nothing to ask about such profound emptiness, which is devoid of speech and realization, such as whether there is a good profit to be extracted, or what kind of difference there is. Because for that Dharma, whoever comes to me only utters irrelevant things, and there is nothing to say. This is like: 'Manjushri asked extensively, the sons of the Victorious Ones remained silent, and the Thus-Gone One gave his approval.' It is like that. Since naming something that is devoid of all essence of things with the name of essence is merely naming the nameless. There is no distinction of good or bad or difference for the essence that has no recognition. As glorious Chandrakirti said: 'Just as the divisions of containers do not divide space, so too there are no divisions made by things in that itself; therefore, having realized the taste of equality, wise one, you comprehend the knowable in an instant.' It is like that. Also, if harm from gods and demons occurs, which is better, meditating on essence or meditating on emptiness with an empty appearance? He replied: 'By meditating solely on essence, even the gods do not approach, so demons and the like cannot harm. But emptiness, even gods and demons can meditate on it, and they can emanate various emanations. Because they have not realized essence, they do not know essence.'

He said, "Not knowing how to meditate, because the essence has not become a place of gods and demons, so it is only happy to meditate on the essence itself." When asked, "Will there be experience in meditating on the essence?" He replied, "There will be experience, but the pride of experience will be broken. Attachment to the world will disappear completely, and it will feel like all other dharmas are unnecessary, leaving only the outer shell. One will have faith in oneself and live peacefully. Experiences and realizations of the essence arising will occur." The meaning of this is: The gods and demons mentioned here do not refer to gods and demons having the same essence, but rather to gods, such as formless realm beings, and gods of the desire and form realms, also like demons holding lineage, merely objects of attachment, without obscuration and hindrance, not clinging to land, stones, mountains, etc., but able to move freely like birds flying in the sky. Demons refer to pretas and other non-humans who obstruct white dharma, possessing karmic magical powers, because they view obstructive and tangible things as empty with wrong views, so they become attached to these things, thus being able to move unhindered through land, stones, rivers, etc., causing harm to yogis. Therefore, for yogis who realize the emptiness that is free from the extremes of elaboration, demons cannot cause harm, but for practitioners who meditate on conceptual emptiness, and the emptiness of cutting off wrong views, etc., demons can cause harm. Because such emptiness is the emptiness of both the harmer and the harmed, that is, viewing things with characteristics as empty from the perspective of emptiness, it is possible to produce benefit and harm for dharmas with characteristics. But viewing emptiness that is free from the characteristics of things from the perspective of emptiness, then for dharmas that transcend all characteristics of things, any benefit and harm are impossible to produce. Therefore, for the body and mind of a yogi who realizes true emptiness, apart from the maturation of past karma, the world including the gods cannot cause harm. Therefore, for true emptiness, the term "meditating on the essence" is used, that is, seeing that the inherently luminous mind is the essence of emptiness that is free from all obscurations and elaborations. In other words, because one understands that the essence is neither real nor unreal, one is free from all attachments. For a yogi who realizes in this way, even the gods will
