105 105 Furthermore, the master said that abiding in the meaning of tranquility (śamatha) and the nature of mind are not the same. Tranquility is when the mind abides without wavering on the object on which it is placed. When abiding in the meaning of the nature of mind, whatever object of thought arises is acceptable. The difference between the two is whether or not awareness has entered the gate. The meaning of tranquility is to apply an antidote to whatever afflictions there may be, such as attachment, and to fix the mind on a virtuous object, preventing other mental activities. In order to gain stability in that samādhi, one remains in that state, and even if the great drum of the gods were sounded, one would not be able to awaken. If this is taken as the measure of accomplished tranquility, then among worldly meditations, this is the best. If clarity arises on that basis, an experience of clarity and emptiness like a clear, cloudless sky will occur. Many who were known as good lamas in the past, relying only on this, have claimed to be realized beings. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra, it is good for those who hold vows to avoid pride, except in the case of the root downfall of lying. Even in tranquility, the lesser vehicles meditate solely for the sake of counteracting the afflictions of the afflictive obscurations. The Great Vehicle, however, primarily uses the view and meditation of tranquility as an antidote to the conceptual thoughts of the cognitive obscurations. By relying on tranquility, the obscurations of the cognitive obscurations, and the obscurations of the afflictive obscurations that depend on it, will also naturally disappear. When abiding in the meaning of the nature of mind, various phenomena of samsara and nirvana arise, cease, appear, and gather in the nature of mind. Therefore, in the unceasing play of the nature of mind, all objects of knowledge arise, and no matter how much they arise, they are not influenced by the obscurations of clinging to characteristics. Furthermore, there is no limit to all objects of knowledge, and they abide without wavering, spontaneously accomplished. Whether or not awareness has entered the gate refers to whether or not all the objects of knowledge of one's own mindstream can appear on that mind. Again, when asked about an experience of clarity and emptiness that is vague and unclear, the answer was: "That is the non-dual wisdom of the Buddha's mind. How can we know that?" Again, when asked about being continuously clear but without support, seeming to disappear into nothingness, the answer was: "That is the ultimate, primordial nature of reality." Similarly, whatever disease arises, if awareness is focused on it, it will naturally disappear, as it is the nature of reality.

The meaning of what was said is: not knowing what the experience of clarity and emptiness is, is the ordinary consciousness previously mentioned. This consciousness is the appearance of delusion of consciousness. Not knowing what this is, it becomes a state beyond thought. When it reaches the ultimate purity, it is the wisdom of the Buddha. Now, when it manifests in one's own continuum, it is the wisdom of direct perception of yoga during the path. Therefore, when we say "where to know" also refers to this. Therefore, ordinary consciousness cannot be imprisoned by deluded consciousness. Even a moment of clarity becomes without support and without foundation, because that ordinary consciousness also becomes its own self-emptiness, rather than it itself not being empty, but emptiness being empty by other dharmas, like a cow being emptied by a horse. In the way that it is empty by its own self-nature, when we look at the self-nature of all phenomena such as diseases, they are also empty by their own self-nature. On the level of conditioned phenomena, the material and consciousness, even if we divide atoms and moments of consciousness into hundreds of millions of parts, not even a single part will remain. When we understand this, the delusion of phenomena will be eliminated. If one obtains a thorough understanding of this key point, one will become a yogi who realizes emptiness, and will be able to effortlessly display the magical powers of emptiness. Nowadays, all the dharmas discussed by Tsongkhapa and his disciples, the object to be emptied, which is empty by its own self-nature, is not the self-nature of things that function, such as matter and consciousness, that is the object to be emptied. They consider the object to be emptied to be a self-established thing, and this view and practice cannot display the magical powers of realizing emptiness. Relying on the realization of the experience of emptiness, which is free from attachment to the manifestations of dependent arising and functioning phenomena, one cannot even suppress the slightest manifestation of attachment and aversion. All the Mahayana sutras and treatises have said this. Again, when asked how the prana enters the central channel, entering the central channel completely without regression only happens at the time of Buddhahood. Apart from that, being drunk, fainting, and engaging in sexual activity
