102 102 Thus, regarding the view and practice of Mahamudra, the way to explain and practice it is as follows, according to the questions and answers of Je Gampopa and Je Düsum Khyenpa. In that question and answer, it says: Later, I asked Lama Rinpoche for the secret instruction of Tummo and practiced it. After a few days, an experience arose that was clear and bright, unlike the previous consciousness, and it was unknown where it came from. So I reported it to him. He said: That is called the experience of 'White Light One-pointedness'. It will always be like that tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and in the future, so keep your back warm, wear thin clothes, and meditate, and it seems that you can boil your consciousness. This means that the power of the ordinary wind-mind of the Tummo secret instruction, gathered in the central channel at the navel, opens the heart of the central channel at the heart chakra, so that the ordinary consciousness 'White Light One-pointedness' that dwells there appears clearly and brightly or the experience is obvious, causing the beginning of the union of the four channels. Keeping the back warm is to warm the heart chakra, in order to open the channel mouth again. Wearing thin clothes is because the body is not burdened by heavy objects, so that the fire element of Tummo does not sink down, but becomes light and rises upwards. After that, he went out to look for food because he had no food, and they did not meet for three months. After that, he went to Olkha Srub (place name) to stay, and after meditating for a few days, a pure experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought arose, so he reported it. He said: Oh, it seems that you are meditating well. But where did that root come from? He replied that he did not know. He said: Oh, then you still have to meditate like that. After meditating for a few days, an experience arose of bliss and clarity, and everywhere on the path of happiness, it seemed that it was the mind. It also seemed that there was a slight understanding that discursive thoughts were also the mind. So he reported it. He said: No matter what arises, such as bliss, clarity, and warmth, do not meditate for too long. That means that the previous one-pointed realization, through the power of meditation, manifests the radiance of the three samadhis of bliss, etc. For example, just as gold becomes brighter when it is welded with solder that removes impurities. If you know where that comes from, if you know where that experience that relies on the realization of 'White Light One-pointedness' comes from, it is called the experience of cutting off the root, and because the power of the arising of realization is not produced by control, those three samadhis are those whose root has not been cut off.

is. Then, how to thoroughly investigate where the root of this knowing in the mind comes from? To repeatedly meditate on the experience of one-pointedness without delay is to repeatedly exert strength so that the heat of that samadhi does not fade. Again, once, I asked, "During practice, the object of meditation and the subject of meditation, appearances and sounds, are not seen at all, and only a state of awareness that is self-illuminating and clear arises." The venerable one replied, "That is like a mute person dreaming, like the pleasure of a young woman, it cannot be understood by speaking. You must understand it through your own practice. No matter what discomfort arises, you may come to me even during my strict retreat." This refers to the innate awareness that emerges nakedly, free from the suddenly arising defilements, that is, free from the grasping of subject and object. This (state) is our ordinary consciousness, together with its objects, purified in the realm of reality, so our ordinary mind cannot be described in words, but through the power of practice, one can attain the wisdom of individual self-awareness, or the wisdom of individual realization, as he indicated. Again, in a dream, a monk preached a dharma that had never been heard before. I asked, "That dream was very clear." The venerable one replied, "Do you like that dream?" I replied, "Yes." The venerable one scolded me severely. He said, "Even if that (dream) manifests various miracles, you must know that it is an illusion, then you will go on the right path. If you cling to it, it will become an obstacle. Therefore, whatever arises in your mind, do not accept the good, and do not reject the bad. You must know that all of this is non-dual. If you do not understand it in this way, then when something unpleasant happens, it will become an obstacle." The meaning of what the venerable one said is that if we look at it from the point of view of appearance, the appearance in a dream is false. Even if it appears real, if it is not truly existent, then how could the appearance in a dream be real? Therefore, in appearances and dreams, whether pleasant or unpleasant, the appearances of good and bad themselves are not truly existent. If one engages in acceptance and rejection of these, generating the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion, then that action itself is mistaken and will become an obstacle on the path to liberation. Therefore, all illusory appearances arise because the nature of the illusory mind is influenced by illusion. They are all merely the nature of temporary defilements. And all non-illusory appearances arise naturally because the nature of the non-illusory mind is influenced by non-illusion, therefore they are all merely the nature of the innate mind. Therefore, illusory appearances are mind.
