Explanation through the Sixteen Emptinesses. Explanation through the Sixteen Emptinesses. Secondly, there are two parts: the connecting passage and the explanation of the meaning. First: Thus, the Teacher again this very thing, Separated for those to be tamed, spoke of many kinds. Thus, the Teacher again separated this very second selflessness for those to be tamed, and spoke of many kinds such as four and sixteen. Secondly, there are three parts: brief statement, detailed explanation, and summary of the meaning. First: Emptiness with elaborations. Having explained sixteen, then summarized, again explained as four, those are, also accepted in the Mahayana. Here, the twenty emptinesses are taught in the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra in twenty chapters as a single whole, and based on that, Arya Simha determined the number of twenty. In the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra and the Tantras, sixteen emptinesses are taught, and based on that, Madhyantavibhanga and the Condensed Meaning of the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra, etc., determined the number of sixteen. In many sutra chapters, initially sixteen emptinesses are taught, and again separately four emptinesses are taught, considering that the meaning of the four is included in the sixteen, Arya Vimuktisena and Haribhadra, etc., summarized the last four into the emptiness of the nature of non-things, but here the teacher considers that the meaning of the sutra that initially taught sixteen and again taught four is that the sixteen are explained in detail and the four are summarized, as it says in the Sutra of the Questions of Subhuti: "Furthermore, Subhuti, the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva is as follows: inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness of abandonment, emptiness of self-nature, emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness of self-characteristics, emptiness of unobtainability, emptiness of the nature of non-things." Having thus explained the sixteen emptinesses with elaborations, Subhuti again said: "Furthermore, Subhuti, form is empty of form. Non-form is empty of non-form. Nature is empty of nature."

Other objects are (319a) Emptiness by other objects. Thus, briefly summarizing, the four emptinesses are again explained. These twenty emptinesses are considered to be the path to the Mahayana, because in order to counteract the obscurations of knowledge, the selflessness of phenomena is extensively taught. If divided in detail, there are sixteen; if summarized, there are four; if very briefly summarized, they are included in two selflessnesses. Such distinctions are also established in the worldly conventional truth. If analyzed, then these emptinesses are not non-empty, because the distinctions of emptiness are thus taught, entirely due to the thoughts of the beings to be tamed, just as forms and so on are established. As it is said in the treatise: If there is slightly non-empty, then there will be slightly empty. If there is not slightly non-empty, then how can there be empty? And it is said: One should not say empty, nor should one do non-empty, one should not do two and non-two, but should speak for the sake of designation. Second, there are two divisions: explaining sixteen kinds with elaboration, and explaining four kinds in brief. First, there are sixteen kinds: internal, external, internal-external, emptiness, great, ultimate, conditioned, unconditioned, beyond extremes, without beginning and end, non-abandonment, nature, all dharmas, self-characteristic, non-apprehension, and the emptiness of the nature of non-things, which are explained in detail. The first is: Because its nature is, therefore the eye is empty by the eye. Likewise, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind should be spoken of. Because it is not permanent, nor is it destructible. Whatever is the non-existence of the nature of the six, such as the eye, is considered to be internal emptiness. It is said in the sutra: (319b) Which become internal emptiness? Which are the internal dharmas? The internal dharmas are the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Because they are not permanent, nor are they destructible, therefore the eye is empty by the eye. Why is that? Because its nature is. And so on, the meaning of which is that because the nature of the eye is emptiness, therefore the eye
