Then, in what way does it lead to the seed? It is something to be restrained to assume that one can defeat the harm of others with the foolish mind that perceives the harm of others when one is enjoying the fruits of misdeeds in one's previous life. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: 'I have done such harm to sentient beings in the past, therefore, this harm should come to me from those who harm sentient beings.' Therefore, one should be patient with the enemy who wields a sharp weapon. Because the result of one's past unwholesome actions ripens in the lower realms, and here, whatever ripens in accordance with the cause, by being patient with it, one exhausts the results of karma, which is what one wants to say. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: 'Relying on these very things, I purify much sin through patience.' Therefore, if one does not cultivate patience towards the harmer, but instead harms in return, then one will be led to the lower realms by the very seed of harm. Now, cultivating patience towards the harmer is like the suffering of taking medicine to cure a disease, which causes even greater suffering in one's own mindstream than the suffering that has already passed. Because the harmer (61a) causes harm to others and suffers from anger. The meaning of the words is: one should cultivate patience with the suffering that purifies sins, just as a patient should endure the bloodletting performed by a doctor to cure a disease. The second point is: Because anger towards the sons of the Victorious Ones destroys in an instant the merit arising from generosity and discipline, accumulated over hundreds of thousands of eons, therefore, there is no sin greater than impatience. Impatience not only brings about painful results, but also exhausts the merit accumulated over a long period of time. Because a bodhisattva, whether knowing or not knowing that the other is a bodhisattva, under the influence of afflictions, fabricates true or false faults and becomes angry, even for a single moment, it destroys the merit accumulated through generosity and discipline over hundreds of thousands of eons. Therefore, what need is there to say if a non-bodhisattva becomes angry with a bodhisattva? It is like the number of drops of water in the great ocean, which cannot be determined. In short, there is nothing greater than impatience.
