Regarding the actual Phowa (transference of consciousness), there are also three aspects: the individual, the time of transference, and the instructions. Firstly, for those yogis who have realized the meaning of Heruka Chakrasamvara and other deities, and who possess the confidence of simultaneously ceasing breath and attaining liberation, there is no need to practice or cultivate Phowa. It is like the way many Indian scholars and accomplished masters, as well as the twenty-five Tibetan king and subjects, passed away. When Lord Marpa was about to pass away, he straightened his body and said, "Children, practice Phowa in this way." Then, he snapped his fingers, and from the crack in the skull at the crown of his head, a five-colored light, the size of a bird's egg, merged into the sky, which everyone saw. The accomplished master Melong Dorje, in the center of a tsokhor (feast gathering), after reciting his last testament, a white light the size of a dome rose from the crown of his head into the sky, becoming larger and larger, pervaded by rainbows, light, and bindus (spheres of light). Also, there are the examples of Jetsun Milarepa and his sons, Gampopa and his sons, and many great beings of the old and new traditions, whose ways of passing away were incredibly miraculous. These are written to inspire faith, although such individuals are very rare in both the old and new traditions today, they are not entirely absent. Those whose root vows have been broken and not purified through confession (page 1 is missing). The Phowa of purification is, in general, as it appears in any Lamrim (stages of the path) teachings, one needs to consult an experienced lama until signs appear. In particular, according to the tradition of this specific instruction, there are three parts: preliminary, main practice, and concluding practice. The first also has three parts, the first being taking refuge: Namo, from now until unsurpassed enlightenment, I and all sentient beings in the six realms of samsara, with body, speech, and mind, respectfully take refuge in the mandala of the protector Amitabha. Recite three times, or as much as possible. The second is generating bodhicitta: HO! For the sake of placing the beginningless and endless beings of the six realms and five aggregates in the state of Amitabha, I generate the mind of aspiration and engagement in supreme bodhicitta, and practice the profound path of Phowa yoga. Recite as above. The third is the seven-branch prayer: HO! My body manifests into as many particles as there are in the vast ocean, and I prostrate before the immortal protector. Actual offerings and countless imagined offerings, I offer to the deities of the Sukhavati pure land. Sins and obscurations of body, speech, and mind

All transgressions, I confess with intense remorse. For all the accumulations of merit gathered by the two truths, I rejoice from the depths of my heart. I urge that the Dharma wheel be turned constantly, according to the capacity and fortune of those to be trained. I beseech the victorious ones and their heirs not to pass into sorrow, but to remain until the end of existence. May all the accumulations of merit gathered in the three times, represented by this, be dedicated so that all beings may attain the realm of great bliss. May the order of these visualizations also be clearly understood. Second, the main practice also has five aspects: First, the essential points of the body to be established, in the state of possessing the seven dharmas of Vairocana, the emptiness of the outer body is visualized as the deity. Without a moment's distraction of the mind elsewhere, recite Om Svabhava (Tibetan: ༀ་སྭ་བྷཱ་ཝ་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ svabhāva, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, Self-nature) etc. All phenomena are transformed into emptiness, the luminosity of their own nature. From within emptiness, on a lotus, sun, and corpse seat, one's own self transforms into the supreme mother Vajrayogini, enjoyed by all the victorious ones of the three times, red, with one face, two arms, three eyes, and four bared fangs. On the right side of the back of the ear is a black sow's face emitting a grunting sound. The right hand holds aloft a vajra chopper, and the left holds a skull cup filled with blood at the heart. Embracing the essence of the father Heruka, the khatvanga (Tibetan: ཁཊྐཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization: khaṭvāṅga, Literal Chinese meaning: Khatvanga) is placed under the left armpit. The right leg is bent, with the heel pressed against the bhaga, and the left leg is extended, standing in a majestic posture. Adorned with five dry skulls as a crown and a necklace of fifty fresh heads. Decorated with bone ornaments. Appearing but without inherent existence, like a reflection in a mirror. Clear but without grasping, like the moon rising in water. In the center of the body, free from obscurations, veils, obstacles, and touch. Second, the emptiness of the inner channels is: The central channel is white on the outside to symbolize bliss. It is red on the inside to symbolize clarity. It is azure in the center to symbolize non-conceptualization. To block the door to the lower realms, the lower end is sealed off like a bamboo joint, four fingers below the navel, contracted into a hole. To open the door to liberation, the upper end is open like the sky at the Brahma aperture at the crown of the head. To symbolize the path to enlightenment, it is very straight, with a thickness like a medium-sized arrow shaft. Moreover, it is as thin as a lotus petal, as clear as a sesame oil lamp, as red as madder juice, and as straight as the trunk of a waterside tree, possessing four characteristics.
