It is not. The very thought of "I" is the ignorance that is the single self-nature, and as that thought gradually becomes coarser and sinks downwards, the co-emergent ignorance arises, and the three ignorances of the universally imputed ignorance that speculates on name, meaning, and self are formed. From this arise four causes of delusion: the alaya-consciousness itself abiding like a house is the substantial cause; the arising of speculation and judgment from it is the dominant cause; the grasping of other objects and other object-holders from it is the objective cause; thus, the three simultaneously becoming causes of delusion is the immediate cause, and from the gathering of these four, delusion gradually becomes stronger. The five poisons of affliction, the three poisons, and so on, increase into a gathering of eighty-four thousand afflictions, and the high and low places of samsara are formed. The causes and conditions of impure samsara, the twelve links of dependent origination, revolve like a chariot wheel. Thus, even the six realms of beings and the four modes of existence, although in reality they do not exist, appear like mirages and the moon in water. This is the nature of illusion. From the time of appearance, the six minds that discern the original empty image that has never existed are minds that are similar to ignorance. The root is the actual ignorance itself, and it is accompanied by movement. The mind of consciousness of mind is called the mind of consciousness because it is controlled by the afflictions that grasp the object as "I." The determining mind is called determining because attachment arises to the grasping of the consciousness that thinks, "The object is my object." The universally seeking mind is the gathering together of all subtle afflictions after the object has been controlled. The completely pure mind is the mind that commits the acts of killing and breaking vows due to coarse afflictions. The definitely establishing mind is the dualistic grasping that thinks of these appearances as "mine" and as "others." This is the definitely establishing mind. When these six minds arise, the six consciousnesses also arise in this way: the object of eye consciousness is form, the object of ear consciousness is sound, the object of nose consciousness is smell, the object of tongue consciousness is taste, the object of body consciousness is touch, and the object of mind consciousness is phenomena. The bondage of conceptual thought that grasps at self is extremely powerful, so that even the nature of mind itself, which is like the realm of space and without inherent existence, is tightly bound. Even though there is no self, it clings to the existence of self, thus creating the endless wheel of universal conceptualization.

It revolves like the rings of a year. This state of worldly existence, some perceive as: humans and animals walking in that way, while others perceive darkness, the activities of ghosts, and so on. Even with the same water, some see it as nectar, the gods; some see it as water, the drink of humans and animals; hungry ghosts see it as pus and blood, hell beings see it as flames, and so on. All these completely contradictory notions arise from following various habitual tendencies, and there is nothing else besides that. Therefore, nothing is certain. Even so, as for the objects of appearance, seeing frightening tigers and leopards, and enemies, that is merely the object of appearance, not the mind. Just as the image of a face enters a mirror, it only appears due to dependent origination. The face and the mirror never meet or mix, yet it appears even though it is not there, and the mind that clings to it is merely a false conceptualization. Just as when seeing a patterned rope, the first thought that arises, clinging to it as a snake, is the object to be grasped, and the subsequent thinking and discerning is the grasper. If someone says that the appearance of the snake is the master consciousness that grasps and is grasped, then anyone who does not distinguish between appearance and the object of appearance, the appearance itself exists and ceases together. For example, if the objects and utensils in front of the eyes are taken away or damaged by others, that person will not change accordingly, and there are many such harms. Earlier, it was said that "ignorance of grasping and clinging is a sudden condition." Initially, not recognizing oneself becomes the cause of delusion. In the middle, the ground appearance arises, and clinging to it as other becomes the condition of delusion. Therefore, it is said, "the self of existence," which is the self of the person; "the middle of me," which is the Dharma belonging to the three doors of that self, all clung to as mine. For example, the first thought of clinging to a non-existent self as self, thinking, "I am the master, and the body of that master is mine," is clinging to me. All that is clung to as other is the Dharma self. All these appear even though they do not exist, arising from the delusion of one's own mind. If the root is severed, that is the All-Creating King, the manifestation of the power of the Sugata-garbha, arising from oneself and dissolving into oneself.
