Hair disheveled and upright, Amitabha resides on the crown of the head. Subduing all Nagas, the trident is entwined with snakes. Holding the blessings of the three lords (Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani), praise to cutting off the three poisons. Holding a stainless lotus, the sword of wisdom blazes. Defilements purified, holding the head of a Brahmin, filled with fragrant flowers. Controlling all Nagas, praise to the beautiful Brahma-thread made of snakes. Residing on a lion and lotus seat, overwhelming the four maras with power. Residing on a white lion seat, for the sake of accomplishing all desires. Adorned with various jewels, each hair is supreme among all sentient beings. Homage to the compassionate one, praise to you! Tā（seed syllable，Sanskrit Devanagari: ता，Sanskrit Romanization: tā，Literal meaning: deliverance）! Bestowing empowerment as the successor to the throne of Dharma. Tara follows, saving from the eight fears, with a green body. Eliminating harm, granting fearlessness, you are the master of lotus-like compassion. I bow to you, who emanate many forms. Hūṃ（Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ，Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं，Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ，Literal meaning: seed syllable）! The white-clad mother acts according to the command, the wish-fulfilling wheel turns freely. Fulfilling desires, pacifying suffering, praise to you who eliminate the eight fears! Phaṭ（Tibetan: ཕཊ，Sanskrit Devanagari: फट，Sanskrit Romanization: phaṭ，Literal meaning: to destroy）! Hayagriva is the wrathful form, the noble Hayagriva destroys the four maras. Krodha Blue-Neck subdues wickedness, praise to you who subdue the Naga demons with Hūṃ（Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ，Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं，Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ，Literal meaning: seed syllable）! Nā（seed syllable，Sanskrit Devanagari: ना，Sanskrit Romanization: nā，Literal meaning: no）! The Naga king of space, Varuna, seeing the face of the water god. Extremely joyful in the Dharma, subduing the Nagas, seeing the truth of the first ground. Holding the relics of the Sugata, praise to the Naga king's Bodhicitta! Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha! Om Kate Bikaṭe Nikaṭe Katam Kara Svaha! Whoever praises and recites this mantra will completely purify the karmic obscurations of having committed the five inexpiable sins. One will enter all mandalas and be able to recite all mantras. For a thousand kalpas, one will not be born in the lower realms or in a female body. Thus spoke the Bhagavan. Mangalam! The History of the Lion's Roar Mantra: In the past, when the Bhagavan was residing on the summit of Mount Potala, King Dwangphyuk Od of Magadha, although possessing vast retinues, consorts, and wealth, was suffering from leprosy, weakness, and burning heart pain. To eliminate his suffering, Manjushri requested the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan said that the king's palace was filled with the poison of the Nagas, and this mantra could expel the poison and pacify it. It is said that Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig, the one who gazes with compassionate eyes) benefits others with his supreme compassion. To help a friend, Manjushri (Jampal) once killed himself with the sword of wisdom. With supreme compassion, the great practitioner Avalokiteśvara thought that the gods, nagas, and other beings in the sky, space, and on earth had all died, so he threatened and subdued all the arrogant ones in the sky, space, and on earth with the khatvanga.
