The Sword of Wisdom that Destroys the Illusions of Mara Instructions from Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo Holding the sword of wisdom and the bow and arrow, Eliminating the battlefield of afflictions and ignorance. Warrior subduing the enemy Mara, I prostrate to the one who dispels the fear of the four Maras. Dwelling in the net of conceptual thoughts, Trapped by the various illusions of Mara, To extract the thorn of the inner mind, I will explain the essential instructions. Wise one, even in your dreams, You crave happiness, but even so, Who obstructs the glory and wealth of this world? And who causes the decline? The path of perfect prosperity and decline, Is practiced in the world as if it were common. If one acts according to one's own desires, Who pushes you to the place of decline? Burning in hell and so on, The endless stream of unbearable suffering, If there is an inflictor, Who would not be angry with him? The great demon hides in the depths, With its five seals, It makes the beings of the three realms, including the gods, Like slaves, constantly tormenting them. Even so, beings do not, Know the nature of this demon, The method of destroying the illusions of Mara, Has never been undertaken. Leading astray with a noble appearance, Binding oneself by binding others, Abandoning oneself due to the entanglement of bonds. Tormenting others is burning oneself, Striking others is destroying oneself, Arrogance, attachment, miserliness, Anger and jealousy, These five detestable illusions of Mara, From the past, Have bound my mind and caused me to fall from it, Alas! Why not see the afflictions, That arise in one's own mind? If you know this truth, in an instant, You will not want to associate with this great enemy. Illusions hide in the darkness of ignorance, Dispel ignorance with the light of wisdom. Holding the sword of light, After destroying the five seals of Mara, After driving the great demon into the depths, May I completely kill it. Not abandoning the nearby object, Not abandoning subtle distractions, By the power of improper attention, Attachment and so on arise and increase. When there is no object, what is attached to? When there is no object-holder, what is attached to? When there are no afflictions, how is there attachment? Therefore, it should be known that it arises in dependence. What is attached to a non-existent object? The collection of material things from reality, Is many dust particles, scattered things, If the dust particles are divided from the direction, Then the nature is emptiness, Existing like a bubble. The mind is the nature of diversity, Even a part of it, If analyzed, cannot be found anywhere. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no place to dwell, and nothing to grasp. The five eyes cannot see it. Who would be attached to it, and how? If not attached to each of the many parts, Then to what else would one be attached? Since there is no object to be attached to, What would one grasp and hold onto? The one who is attached is also without substance, And if analyzed as an entity, Like the entity of an object, Who would see attachment? Therefore, this attachment that one does not want to let go of, This attachment has no beginning, And does not remain at the end, But is a sudden occurrence arising from conditions. The object and the subject of this, Are momentary because they arise from causes. Like unstable lightning, moving, Who is attached to whom? Likewise, all objects and subjects of miserliness, hatred, etc., Should be individually analyzed and destroyed With this kind of reasoning. Thus, if the ultimate reality of things Is not perceived in objects and subjects, Then what is the self and other That has become an entity? The nature of non-entity is not self, Like space, it is devoid of action. Therefore, these phenomena of entity and non-entity Are empty of the nature of both self. Thus, in terms of ultimate reality, Like space, there is nothing to focus on, But by focusing with conceptual thought, So many aggregates arise. Now, in the absence of focus, All the habitual imprints of focus, In the peaceful realm of nature, Have faith in this method. Attachment to that which appears but does not exist Is extremely unbearable, Because by being attached to what should not be attached to, One invites a thousand sufferings. Like this impure substance of thirty-six parts, With the distinction of being arranged in shape, The bodies of men, women, etc., What do you want to embrace and caress? In this ocean of blood, excrement, and urine, Where countless impure worms reside, If there is anything worthy of attachment, Please point out what it is. Thus, being deceived by attachment To what is naturally impure, One plunges into the mire of suffering, And has no reliable essence. Whatever is destroyed by time, And if labeled without merit, But with the fault of dwelling in many faults, If one focuses on this object, Not only should there be no attachment, But one should become accustomed to extreme disgust, Like in a pool of filth. Therefore, by being bound by attachment to this, One will not attain the glory of prosperity. If abandoning this evil thing Attracts hundreds of thousands of benefits and happiness, Then naturally it will be separated, And since there is no essence, but to take the essence, One should protect it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
