The commentary on the Madhyamakalankara by the great master Shantarakshita has three parts: the meaning of the title; a detailed explanation of the nature of the treatise; and the act of completing the explanation. The first is easy to understand. The second is divided into: showing that there is no reality in the ultimate truth; showing that there is existence in the conventional truth; and refuting the arguments against it. The first is divided into: stating the sign; and establishing the reason. The first is divided into: establishing the absence of one truth; and establishing the absence of many truths. The first is divided into: refuting the pervasive one; and refuting the non-pervasive one. The first is divided into: refuting the permanent entity as one truth; and refuting the person as one truth. The first is divided into: refuting the permanent entity established by other schools; and refuting the permanent entity established by our own school. The first is: for the four, such as the result, if we make a reductio ad absurdum, then the principal (གཙོ་བོ་) is the subject, it should not be true as the sole entity, because it benefits the many results that are in sequential order, and it brings the many results that are in sequential order closer together. If we make an autonomous syllogism, then only the result is the subject, it should occur simultaneously, because it arises from one real cause, unimpeded ability. If we accept this, it is refuted by direct perception. As a result of such a reductio ad absurdum, only the cause is the subject, it is not true as one, because it brings closer the benefit to the many results that are before and after. Therefore, the cause is only one truth, it is refuted, and the principal is also one truth, it is refuted. For the two subsequent establishments of pervasion, if the principal is one, true, but it does not contradict the fact that it benefits the results that are before and after, then does the principal have the ability to generate the results that are before and after in sequence, or does it not? If it does not, then the results should be generated simultaneously, whatever generates the results, because it does not have the ability to generate in sequence. If it does, then it should fall away from the permanent, one, true. Result

Because the abilities to generate prior and subsequent things individually have many differences. Secondly, regarding the twenty branches such as meditation, the Vaibhashikas believe that the three unconditioned dharmas, which are understood by the samadhi wisdom of the noble ones arising from meditation, are united as true. For these three unconditioned dharmas, it is not reasonable, because the wisdom arising from meditation is related to many things in a prior and subsequent order, as well as to the object and subject. In this regard, inferring its pervasiveness, the wisdom arising from meditation will be confused, and all three unconditioned dharmas will become momentary. Firstly, for consciousness and so on, even if the wisdom arising from meditation is related to many things in a prior and subsequent order, as well as to the object and subject, it is still united as true. If you say so, then, do the three unconditioned dharmas, which are the object of the previous meditation wisdom, exist or not exist at the time of the subsequent meditation wisdom? If it is like the first case, then the previous meditation wisdom should also exist at the later time, because it is the previous side. The subsequent meditation wisdom should also exist at the previous time, because the subsequent object exists at the previous time. If it is not pervasive, then the simultaneous existence of object and consciousness will be destroyed. If it is like the second case, then for the four things such as blue, the three unconditioned dharmas are dharmas, and should become momentary, because the previous nature does not arise in the subsequent state, and the subsequent nature does not arise in the previous state. For example, like the wisdom arising from meditation. Furthermore, the subsequent unconditioned dharmas are dharmas, and should not become conditioned dharmas, because the previous unconditioned dharmas arise depending on the power of the previous ones. For example, like the mind and mental factors arising from meditation. If the reason is not established, then for the four things such as momentariness, it is a dharma, and should arise autonomously, because it does not depend on other causes. If you admit it, then it should always arise, because it is something that cannot be reversed by the power of the cause. It should always not exist, because it is something that does not follow the cause. Refutation of a truly existing person: For the four things such as momentariness, the Sthavira Nikaya says that a person who cannot be described as either permanent or impermanent is truly existent. If you say so, the person is a dharma, and should be separated from the true unity, because it cannot be described as permanent. It should be separated from the true multitude, because it cannot be described as impermanent. The pervasiveness should be established, because it is not by nature
