Although the conduct is boundless, the main precepts are the six perfections and the four means of attraction. Bodhisattvas have only two things to do: to mature their own causes for Buddhahood and to mature the continuums of sentient beings. These two are accomplished through the perfections and the means of attraction. As it says in the Bodhisattva Grounds, "The perfections fully ripen one's own Buddha-dharmas, and the objects of attraction fully ripen all sentient beings. In short, the activity of the virtuous dharmas of bodhisattvas should be understood as such." Therefore, these two are also arranged here. If you want to know more details, you should look for them in the Bodhisattva Grounds. How to practice them in meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment? Jowo Je Chenpo (Great Lord Atisha) said, "The conduct of bodhisattvas is to firmly practice this path of accumulation with the yoga of meditative equipoise and rising from it, such as the great six perfections." As he said, a beginner bodhisattva who has taken the bodhisattva vows and abides on the path of accumulation does not go beyond the six perfections, whether practicing meditative equipoise or subsequent attainment. Therefore, some of the six perfections are practiced in meditative equipoise, and some are practiced in subsequent attainment. Some aspects of calm abiding, which is the essence of concentration, and special insight, which is the essence of wisdom, are meditated upon in meditative equipoise. The first three perfections and some parts of concentration and wisdom are practiced in subsequent attainment. Diligence comes in both meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. One aspect of patience, which is to have a firm conviction in the profound Dharma, sometimes also occurs in meditative equipoise. Jowo Je Chenpo said, "At the time of rising from meditative equipoise, like the eight examples of illusion, one becomes accustomed to seeing all phenomena, purifies subsequent thoughts, and mainly learns skillful means. At the time of being in meditative equipoise, calm abiding and special insight should be equal, and one should constantly become accustomed to that." Such conduct is very wonderful and difficult to do, and those who have not trained their minds feel pain in their hearts when they hear it. Even bodhisattvas cannot practice it from the beginning, but if they understand it and become accustomed to it to the point of making it the object of their aspirations, then later they will enter it naturally without effort, so habit is very important.
