Chapter Twenty-one of the Collection of Discourses: A Detailed Explanation of the Merits of Studying the Teachings Given to Monks. Chapter Twenty-one of the Collection of Discourses: A Detailed Explanation of the Merits of Studying the Teachings Given to Monks. This is called a detailed explanation of the merits of studying the teachings given to monks. Homage to the unsurpassed teacher. Contemplating the four truths and being virtuous through discipline. Begging for these and begging for food to attain peace. For the sake of abandoning attachment, living well, and entering the path. The term 'monk' is used, its meaning connected to the sound. To transcend suffering with firm resolve is the meaning of perfection, free from all harm. For those who are close, whether novices or lay practitioners, the term 'fully ordained' is explained in the commentaries. By relying on words and relying on meaning, if one can understand the contradictions between sutra and mantra rituals, when a holder of mantra vows obtains the four empowerments, one can also understand the meaning of being described as a monk. Through the ritual of following wisdom, if the causes and conditions are complete, without relying on vows, even if one accidentally receives the vows of one's own school, it is still attachment, accompanied by misdeeds. Therefore, Faultless and perfect discipline is that one must abide as a follower of non-Buddhists and as a lay practitioner for four months. Receiving full ordination after being a nun also has the fault of violating vows, except for women. Shakya and those with matted hair, like Mewa, etc., without prohibition, also show the connection of vows. From the Great Name Sutra, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, and the eight precepts of the observance day as a lay practitioner, is not as stated, but is derived from the word 'Sika'. Upavasatha is the seven types of lay practitioners. Protecting one aspect or possessing one direction, etc., the Vaibhashika school of the Sutra tradition is that the limbs are definite, and vows do not arise, considering the complete lay practitioner to be in a state of decline. Whatever three vows, starting from a lay practitioner, one wishes to obtain through the method of giving and receiving, that of the giver becomes a destructive factor of exhaustion. Therefore, one should understand obtaining them through repetition. Its characteristic is the burden of vows, and as the individual who bears the burden obtains the substance of mental vows. Non-associated formations, such as determination, divide the burden of vows into two: abandoning and abiding. The state of complete fulfillment of all three vows is also that if one wishes to change the state, while offering a monk, there exists a destructive factor that destroys the other two.

Therefore, the view that the material basis of vows is different is the view of the Vaibhashikas. However, for a single action such as killing, if the actual basis of the karma is divided into two, it is like searching for shadows for the moon and stars when the sun, moon, and stars are gathered together. Even so, in this last of the five hundred years, due to the power of fear of protection and good wishes, the thought of Nirvana is weakened, and there are many cases where only individual liberation vows remain. The ultimate intention of the Vinaya Pitaka's four transmissions is: all phenomena are preceded by mind, mind is the chief. If you say names and claim to be beggars, etc., do not just be nominal, but be a true Bhikshu. The reason for this is only renunciation, just like young Siddhartha (Shakyamuni Buddha's name before renunciation) leaving the palace. Know everything, and if you know these, the three-matter rituals will become shadows. Merely the Pratimoksha vow will also be transformed into a meaningful state, just like Ananda's two close relatives, as well as Delight, Nakshatra, and close relatives, abiding in the four fruits of a Shramana. The merits of renunciation are infinite, abandon this evil nature and habit. Disgusting the household, being attached to the dwelling, even if scolded, still turning back with angry eyes, etc., will become the criteria for examining the four qualities of a Shramana. Through renunciation, one can know suffering, abandon the origin, and realize cessation. Having mindfulness, relying on the path, one obtains undefiled vows. Through renunciation, one can respect the instructions of the Khenpo and Acharya, as well as the training places such as the seven abandonments. Abandon all affairs related to the family, becoming the best of the renunciates. Its nature is twelve practices, namely, alms begging, eating in one sitting, not accumulating food, three Dharma robes, felt, duster, living under a tree, not residing in temples, not residing in shelters under trees, living in cemeteries, and always sitting without lying down. If these twelve are divided in detail, they become twenty. Among them, there are two types of alms begging: being content with what is obtained, begging from familiar households; begging in order, passing through each household, and eating what is obtained. The opposite of this is focusing too much on food, raising one's status and going. Even places where one eats like a dog, one does not snatch. Nowadays, they measure by what they obtain, and even rob and plunder. This is not the rule of Shakyamuni Buddha, but the behavior of heretical religions. Disgusted with the household, believing in Buddhism.
