The continuum is moist. Skilled in the rituals of the ocean of scriptures and tantras, Rich in the fruit of stainless wisdom of abandonment and realization, With the flowers of the four means of gathering blooming brilliantly, Relying on attracting the bees of fortunate disciples. Especially the lama who teaches the essential instructions, Having received empowerment, abiding in vows, extremely peaceful, Understanding the meaning of the continuum of the ground, path, and fruition, Perfecting the signs of approach and accomplishment, liberating one's own mind through realization. Possessing immeasurable compassion, solely working for the benefit of others, Having few activities, diligently focused on the Dharma, Greatly possessing renunciation, also encouraging others to do so, Skilled in means and possessing the blessings of the lineage, Relying on such a one, accomplishments are swift. Protecting the lineage like a Brahmin, Or in a pond in a secluded place fearing deterioration, Entering into a bath that is not a place for the fruit of hearing and contemplation. A guide like a self-cutting of wood, Although not contradicting the nature of ordinary beings, Yet with the faith of fools, arbitrarily applying places, Filled with offerings of gain and respect, A spiritual friend like drawing water from a well, Having little learning and broken vows and commitments, Having a low capacity and conduct that goes to the ground, Severing the rope of love and compassion, Increasing sin more than the guides of madmen. Especially not possessing qualities superior to oneself, If relying on one who is devoid of bodhicitta through the power of fame, It is a great mistake like a blind guide, Accompanying in pretense, wandering in the darkness of ignorance. Therefore, if the holy one is not thoroughly examined, The virtuous accumulations of the faithful will be wasted, The leisure and opportunity that are difficult to obtain will be like a poisonous snake, Deceived like mistaking the shadow of a tree. The lama who possesses all qualities, Is the essence of the wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas, Appearing in the realm of those to be tamed in the form of a person, Is the unsurpassed root of all accomplishments. In terms of provisional meaning, in harmony with all, In terms of ultimate meaning, contradicting all establishments, Because of possessing secret intention, surpassing all. Skilled in cutting doubts, enduring the weariness of wrong actions, Liberating from the ocean of existence, therefore a great ship, A true guide who does not err on the supreme path, Destroying the fire of karma and afflictions, therefore a rain of nectar, Dispelling the darkness of ignorance, therefore like the sun and moon, Because of the extremely great vehicle, like the earth, A wish-fulfilling tree that is the source of benefit and happiness, Possessing a treasure of Dharma.

Homage to the excellent vase, which is superior even to the wish-fulfilling jewel that produces all things. With impartial love for all beings, it is like a father and mother. Its great and swift compassion is like a river. Its unwavering joy is like the king of mountains. Its undisturbed equanimity is like rain clouds. Such a lama is equal to all Buddhas. Even if harm is done, if it is connected to the path of happiness, for the person who relies on him with unfeigned faith, the qualities of higher realms and definite goodness will fall like rain. Just as a sick person relies on a doctor, a guest relies on an escort, a frightened person relies on a helper, a merchant relies on a caravan leader, and a boatman relies on a helmsman, so should one rely on the lama out of fear of birth, death, and the enemy of afflictions. To draw near to him is to be a disciple. If the vessel is not suitable, the essence will not benefit. If one is satisfied with mere material things, one will measure the changes of the four seasons with artificial faith. At first, one does not enter the path of Dharma, like a wild yak. In the middle, one hates listening and contemplating, and cherishes this life. In the end, one takes the side of evil friends, and one's actions are reversed, like a wild man at the edge of the forest. When one is in the presence of a holy being, one is eager to flee. Wherever one goes, one is seized by sin. If one is urged to go to a solitary place, one will not abide in the Dharma, like the tip of a kusha grass that follows the wind. With a base character and deceitful words, like the tongue of a snake, one attends to the lama like a musk elephant. After obtaining the precious Dharma like musk, one throws the vows at the hunter with great joy. One's mind is narrow and cannot comprehend everything. After obtaining the key points of the instructions, one abandons them again. In the end, one is exhausted from searching for various texts. One does not see the new, and one loses all the old. Compared to the faith that is combined with the true meaning, and the desire to accomplish this life, one does not give predictions for either, and remains neutral. It is most important to examine the characteristics of abiding in the three. One has great armor and extremely firm intelligence. One does not look at body and life, and strives to serve. One regards everything the lama says as the standard, and does not protect oneself. Such a person is liberated by faith alone. One has faith and wisdom, great learning and great compassion. One respects vows and commitments, and the three doors of body, speech, and mind are tamed. One is broad-minded, generous, has pure appearances, and is ashamed. One is wise by protecting the lama very much, and does not get angry at the lama's rebukes, like a fine horse. One goes and comes like a boat, and abandons attachment to dwelling. One bears all good and bad like a bridge. Like a carpenter's bench, one endures hot and cold.
