The Eighth Chapter: Fully Embracing the Mind of Enlightenment The Eighth Chapter: Fully Embracing the Mind of Enlightenment Superior is the offering for the sake of whatever gain, 241, the mind of enlightenment that obtains the four immeasurables. By leading with the illusory means of the chariot of aspiration and engagement, it causes the evil view of peace to decline. Even those bound in the prison of sinful suffering of samsara, 242, by generating the mind of enlightenment, and greatly rejoicing in obtaining the crown of the name of the prince, are revered by the world including gods and humans. From the clouds thick with the darkness of karma and afflictions, 243, like the flashing of fierce lightning, the virtue, the mere fortune of occasional habituation, like a water tree, its roots are despised by its fruits. Like a field that relies on good soil, 244, like an abundant harvest of virtuous crops, when the tree of the mind of enlightenment exists, it bears many fruits and increases until peace. The vessel of all suffering, karma, afflictions, and actions, 245, the ocean of samsara, with waves of conceptual thought, like holding the home of sentient beings, is the great courage of abandonment, the mind of enlightenment. For whom there is no thought of self-interest, 246, like the hungry and thirsty longing for food and water, solely for the benefit of sentient beings, seeking the state of omniscience, is known as the mind of enlightenment. That, too, is the aspiring mind that vows to the result, 247, the precepts of equality and exchange of self and others, and the three of cherishing others more than oneself, are the essence of the precepts, and its nature truly abides in the four immeasurables such as love. The mind of engagement that vows to the cause, its precepts are the six perfections, relying on all pure objects of conduct. From the door of differentiation, there are two: the arising and the ultimate mind of enlightenment. Depending on the three trainings, there are three minds of enlightenment. Especially, in the paths of accumulation and preparation, one practices with faith. From the first ground to the seventh, there is superior intention. In the three pure grounds, there is complete maturation, 250, and in the Buddha ground, there are four by abandoning obscurations. Likewise, following the five paths, there are five minds of enlightenment. Depending on the six perfections, there are that many numbers. The boundaries of the grounds are differentiated into twenty-two, etc. 251, pervading and encompassing with aspiration and engagement. Whoever seeks the benefit of oneself, constantly
