The Condensed Essence of the Commentary on the Six-Branched Yoga In Sanskrit: Yoga Shat Anga Briti Hridayalaghunama In Tibetan: Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! Having paid homage to Vajrasattva, I shall explain the six-branched yoga. This is to express reverence and to promise an explanation. The practice of receiving the oral instructions is divided into two parts: a concise statement and a detailed explanation. Concise statement: Cutting off the individual grasping of the five senses for the five objects; remaining steadfast without being moved by the various empty forms such as seeing smoke; stopping the flow of the right and left channels of the life force through effort, causing them to enter the bindu of the central channel; once the air has entered the central channel, similarly, through the power of grasping the ཧཾ་(Tibetan: ཧཾ,Sanskrit Devanagari: हं,Sanskrit Romanization: haṃ,Chinese literal meaning: seed syllable)bindu at the crown of the head, the melting of bodhicitta, like the fire of tummo entering the cremation ground, blazing in the navel chakra; subsequently, remembering the mudra; the immutable bliss-emptiness samadhi arising from relying on the empty form of the great mudra. Thus, the six-branched yoga is the supreme method for attaining Buddhahood, which accomplishes the benefit of beings through the basis—the mind itself, the path—pure non-conceptual samadhi, and the result—the body of non-conceptual wisdom. It is taught in all the king of tantras, such as the glorious Kalachakra. Second, the detailed explanation is divided into six parts. First, cutting off individually is divided into two parts. The meaning of cutting off individually is: the five senses, such as the eye, do not take the five objects, such as form. Second, the method is divided into three parts. First, practicing the night yoga: in a secluded place with the proper conditions, sit on a comfortable cushion. The three conditions for immobility are: sitting in the vajra posture, keeping the spine straight, placing the hands in fists on the thighs, slightly bending the neck, and gazing at the sky in front without closing the eyes, twelve or sixteen fingers' breadths down from the tip of the nose, without moving the body. As it is said: 'With eyes neither open nor closed.' Keeping the speech still: do not deliberately hold the breath in, do not deliberately exhale, keep it natural. By keeping it thus, if the air is held in too much, there will be heat in the upper body; if the air is exhaled too much, there will be cold in the lower body. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2-118 To keep the mind unmoving is to not alter the mind, but to place awareness in its natural state, focusing on the present moment, without thinking or contemplating, relaxing and abiding in samadhi. This is further divided into three. The first is to place awareness in a state of non-attachment: the body remains still and unmoving, the eyes wide open. Speech remains still, free from words. The mind does not chase after the past, nor does it anticipate the future, but without counting or distinguishing the present moment, the natural state is placed in a state of non-attachment, and this is samadhi. As it is said: 'Initially, be free from beginning and end, in the middle, rely on it briefly, abide in it and abandon it, from this, ten signs will arise.' Therefore, placing the three times—past, present, and future—in a state of non-discrimination is like the instruction of being with three brothers in an intermediate state. To focus awareness on one point: the body and speech remain still as before. Focus the mind, eyes, and breath on one point in the sky directly in front of the space between the eyebrows, and keep the eyes wide open. As it is said: 'Mind, eyes, and breath in the space between, the skilled yogi should do simultaneously, surely the qualities of the Victorious One will arise, this is the word of the All-Knowing One.' Therefore, this is like placing consciousness through one door, like a monkey tied to one door. To keep the mind in a state of not thinking anything, as before, the mind abides without attachment in emptiness, without thinking of anything. As it is said: 'Not taking what is not real as real, but taking what is real as not real, taking the mind as not mind, do not think of anything.' 2-119 As it is said, this is the instruction of not thinking of anything, like a painting on the wall of a temple. To relax and abide the mind: the body and speech remain still as before. The mind is in a state of being free from fabrication, relaxing inwardly, not discriminating anything, and abiding in samadhi without distraction. As it is said: 'If bound, it runs in ten directions, if released, it remains unmoving, maidens see the drum, but I see it as inverted.' As it is said, this is the instruction that if the mind is relaxed, it abides in self-liberation, like the sound of a drum being struck. Like this, for the four instructions on cutting off conceptual thoughts, abide in samadhi without distraction. This is extremely important. In the scriptures, it says: 'If the mind is distracted, one cannot even accomplish one's own benefit, let alone the benefit of others? The samadhi of an undistracted mind is the path of all Buddhas of the past, present, and future.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
