25. The Jataka of the Bodhisattva Born Without Sorrow 25. The Jataka of the Bodhisattva Born Without Sorrow Furthermore, for a time, this glorious lama benefited sentient beings through the conduct of a Shravaka. How so? In the "Sutra of the Blossoming Flower," the Bhagavan addressed Maitreya, saying: "Maitreya, it is like this: In the past, immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable eons ago, a Tathagata named King of Bliss appeared in the world. His lifespan was eighty-four thousand years. He turned the wheel of Dharma in three great assemblies. In the first assembly, seventy hundred thousand Arhats attained realization. In the intermediate assembly, fifty thousand Arhats attained realization. In the final assembly, ten hundred thousand Arhats attained realization. All of them were Arhats, free from defilements, having done what needed to be done, having cast off their burdens, having fully attained their own benefit, having exhausted their afflictions, and being completely liberated through wisdom. There was a Dharma king named Lion of Merit, who was empowered from his crown. His palace was a nine-storied building made of various jewels. There were five great courtyards, filled with elephants, horses, mules, buffaloes, yaks, and so forth. It was surrounded by eight hundred thousand households. Ministers and soldiers were countless. The king's consort, Moonlight Mother, had two sons adorned with marks and signs. The elder was named Without Sorrow, and the younger was named Free from Sorrow. The two princes, out of affection for each other, saw the Bhagavan King of Bliss surrounded by many Arhats joyfully departing from the great city. Prince Without Sorrow said to his younger brother: 'Free from Sorrow, do you see the Buddha and his retinue departing?' Free from Sorrow said: 'I see them, I see them well.' Then Without Sorrow spoke in verse: Free from Sorrow, look after him! To the Buddha, King of Bliss! Many attendants respectfully praise him! He departs in great splendor! I too shall generate such a mind! Seeking the unsurpassed path! To escape the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, the cycle of existence.

Saving all sentient beings. The power of desire, hatred, and ignorance, Creates all non-virtuous deeds. By that power, all sentient beings, Will all revolve in the three lower realms. I will strive on the path to Buddhahood, And urge these sentient beings. Free from sorrow, you too, in that way, Generate the unsurpassed mind of enlightenment. Meeting a Buddha is extremely rare, Like the flower of the Udumbara. Then, the sorrowless one spoke to the elder: Merely speaking words will not accomplish it. The world does not practice, only speaks words. I do not speak with words, But with the mind, I speak of enlightenment. Do you speak of striving for Buddhahood? One cannot speak as one has spoken. Those words are all false, There is no truth in the ripening of fruit. If merely speaking words were enough, If one could attain enlightenment manifestly, Then all who speak words, Should all be able to attain Buddhahood. Then, the sorrowless one said: If you generate the mind like you, That is being bound by desire. To make the disciples afraid, When speaking of generating the mind, To the great being of sentient beings, Give equally wealth and Dharma. There is no stinginess towards all, It is being devoted to accomplishing enlightenment. If you generate the mind in that way, That is not called laziness. If you do not act as you have spoken, That thought will be criticized. You are the unsurpassed path, Difficult to accomplish like the immeasurable. Then if you generate a mind like a gathering, It is better not to speak. Then, the sorrowless one said: The difference between them, I will send to ask my Buddha, the King of Bliss. Having said that, in the place where the pearl staircase descends, Prince Sorrowless had even greater faith, jumped from the top floor, and without harming his body, went to where the Blessed One was. He took off his precious clothes, untied them from the diadem on his head, and together with the jewels, offered them to the Blessed One, the King of Bliss. Prince Sorrowless then came out and also saw his brother. Having seen him, he was greatly amazed in his heart and said: You, Sorrowless, like a vajra, Now also together from the top floor, The stainless light is asking the Blessed One, From where did the path of the first one to go come? Thus he spoke. Then, the
