The Anointing Ritual of the Medicine Buddha The Anointing Ritual of the Medicine Buddha I prostrate to the eight Sugatas, the Bhagavan! I, Kharchen Tso Gyal, and a few lords and subjects such as Atsara, circumambulate the Buddhas of the three times in Orgyen (ཨོ་རྒྱན，乌仗那，莲花生大士的出生地) with respectful body, speech, and mind, offer a precious mandala, and beseech them to listen with fervent hearts: Orgyen Protector Rinpoche, for the benefit of sentient beings who have been our mothers, please bestow the blessings and anointing sequence of the Bhagavan Medicine Buddha! The Orgyen Lama said: Listen carefully, fortunate lords and subjects! The sequence of aspiration empowerments of the noble Tathagata (འཕགས་པ་དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པ་) is as follows: The dwelling should be well-arranged, adorned with parasols and banners, and sprinkled with the essence of the five good scents. On the beautiful base, place a beautifully painted thangka with colored grains and deities. In the center, place a vase filled with water containing the five scents and medicines, filling three-quarters of it, and adorn the neck with silk, attaching the colors of the deities. In front of it, place offerings of rice and other foods, the eight principal attendants, accompanied by two bodhisattvas on the right and left, and twelve yakshas. Set up deity tormas and surround the perimeter with offerings of the five senses. Arrange the empowerment substances of body, speech, and mind, and the supporting substances, symbols, and practices, without error, just as they are. Then, the disciples should be seated in front, cleansed with the water of the Namjom (རྣམ་འཇོམས་) mantra, and the general and specific history should be told. Offer a mandala and make supplications: Kyeho, Lama Sugata! Vajra body that has conquered the armies of the four maras! By your power, protect us from fear and lead us to the field of liberation! Mature our minds with the true empowerment, and grant us the empowerments of body, speech, and mind! After supplicating three times in this way, the master says: Kyeho, listen, fortunate sons! If you have the mind of renunciation, desiring to be liberated from the city of suffering samsara, then I will bestow upon you the secret empowerments of body, speech, and mind of the Bhagavan Medicine Buddha. Receive this Sugata empowerment! Having said this, perform the refuge and bodhicitta, and the seven-branch practice as usual. Then, following that, give the samaya water and proclaim the vows: Fortunate ones of noble lineage, drink this samaya vajra water! I am your lama, cherish the vajra master as your eyes! Unlike this humble place, in the center of a palace that has become a beautiful city of precious medicine, you yourselves are not ordinary beings like this, but visualize yourselves as vidyadhara sages, born from the minds of gods. In the sky in front, on a lotus moon fearless lion throne, in the center is Buddha Bhaisajya, with a blue body, earth-touching mudra, holding an arura and a bowl filled with medicine, wearing the three Dharma robes, sitting in the vajra posture, complete with the qualities of marks and signs. In front of him, in order, are the King of Auspicious Names, the King of Glorious Melodious Sounds, Golden Goodness Immaculate Precious Light Ascetic Accomplishment, Sorrowless Supreme Glory, Dharma Proclamation Ocean Sound, Dharma Ocean Supreme Wisdom Manifest Knowledge, Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light Buddha, the twelve Yaksha generals who are the leaders of the sage Yaksha hosts, the four great kings, and so on, visualize them like a gathering crowd, and pray that they will eliminate the diseases, evil spirits, and sufferings of beings like myself, and bless our lineage!
