Collected Teachings of the Omniscient Gorampa, GR101: General Approach to the Practice of Tutelary Deities in Relation to the Four Tantras, The Vase of Accomplishments General Approach to the Practice of Tutelary Deities in Relation to the Four Tantras, The Vase of Accomplishments First, the preparation. General Approach to the Practice of Tutelary Deities in Relation to the Four Tantras, The Vase of Accomplishments Om Swasti! I prostrate with the crown of my head in reverence to the Lama together with the Tutelary Deity. From the four types of Tantras, [come] the means to accomplish the supreme and common [goals]. The three rituals of recitation, practice, and action are taught. Of these, the first is recitation, which has many distinctions of high, medium, and low. Here, I will write a little about the method of performing the recitation of numbers. It also has high, medium, and low [levels]. The latter two are not relevant here. The high [level] has three parts: preparation, main part, and conclusion. The first is: In a secluded and pleasing place, which is auspicious, the floor should be well swept and cleaned. The supports and offerings should also be arranged purely. Then, if the person has a predominance of phlegm and heat, the yoga of bathing should be done as explained in their respective practice methods. If there is a predominance of wind and cold, it is not necessary to do it, because it will help with contemplation. It is said that the yoga of bathing should be done if it is going to be a friend of contemplation. Even if the yoga of bathing is not completed, it is necessary to take water, etc., when eating food or urinating during the session, as the great accomplished Naropa said: 'Avoid reciting mantras without rinsing your mouth.' Then, on a cushion with inner purity, facing east in the world, sit in either the full or half lotus position, or squat in the lotus position. First, it is necessary to examine one's own mind well, as Je Lama said: 'Do not enter into confusion.' If one's mind is under the control of afflictions and other thoughts, then one must improve one's mind well with impermanence of death, etc., and encourage virtue. If one does not do so, the practice will be under the control of afflictions, and virtue will not be accomplished. Therefore, it is important to encourage the mind towards virtue with a stable motivation of faith in the Lama and the Three Jewels, and to do as much as possible to keep the mind from being mixed with afflictions by repeatedly remembering. As Naropa said: 'Abandon laziness without faith.' Second, the main part. The second, the main part: Starting with refuge and generating bodhicitta, purify the continuum by meditating and reciting Vajrasattva according to the methods of the mother and father tantras respectively. Then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding the stage of familiarizing oneself with realization during initiation, through introducing the basis for practice and the method of practice, whether the object is clear or unclear, without being influenced by other conceptual thoughts, extracting the mind from eye consciousness and proceeding in a direct and swift manner, as stated in the instructions of Vīravajra (勇金刚) and his sons: 'Clear, intense, and brief, the generation stage is of utmost importance.' After that, when it comes to the stage of holding the mind in one's own generation stage, visualizing the entire mandala including the support and the supported, and especially visualizing oneself as the main deity, including the face, hand gestures, ornaments, posture, etc., visualizing it as appearing but without inherent existence, like a reflection in a mirror, and maintaining this pride for a long time. For beginners, even if the object is not clear, maintaining a firm pride in thinking 'I am that deity' and remaining in that state for a long time is very beneficial. As stated in the Vajra Garland of the Ḍākinī (空行母金刚帐): 'Through the yoga of Buddha pride, one will definitely attain Buddhahood.' The Buddha to be attained is: 'The teacher with thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks.' After that, performing the blessing of the rosary, etc., and diligently cultivating the visualization of pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and wrathful activities as explained in one's own texts, and reciting the mantra clearly and completely without omissions or additions. As Nāropa (那若巴) said: 'Avoid slurring the syllables of the mantra.' During all the times of recitation, one must focus on the visualization of radiating and withdrawing light, etc. As Nāropa (那若巴) said: 'Avoid reciting mantras without mindfulness.' One must repeatedly and clearly establish the visualization of the deity. As Nāropa (那若巴) said: 'Avoid reciting mantras with an unclear deity.' That is to say, whether it is the visualization of the deity, the radiating and withdrawing of light, or even the clear sound of the mantra, it is important to strive to integrate it as much as possible with awareness. If it is mixed with ordinary conceptual thoughts and practiced for a long time, the effect will be very small. As stated in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* (《入菩萨行论》): 'Recitations and ascetic practices, even if practiced for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, the Buddha said that they are meaningless.' Therefore, when entering the approach and accomplishment stages, one must strongly counteract dullness, drowsiness, and distraction, otherwise it is said that the power will be diluted. As Nāropa (那若巴) said: 'Avoid being controlled by sleep.' Mantras and so on should be recited secretly and in a whisper, because reciting them loudly will incur the fault of the seventh root downfall. As Nāropa (那若巴) said: 'Avoid clear and loud mantra sounds.' Like this --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
