Collection of Teachings by the Omniscient Gorampa, GR35: Commentary on Grammar 1-5-1a ༄༅། །Commentary on Grammar ༄། །General Presentation of the Classification of Letters ༈ Actual Classification ༄༅། །Commentary on Grammar 1-5-1b Homage to the Protector Manjushri. This Grammar, 'Entrance to Grammar,' has three meanings: general presentation of the classification of letters; division of prefixes into four categories; division of suffixes into three categories. The first meaning has two parts: the actual classification; and extracting the ten letters that can be added from it. The first is: 'Masculine letters' etc., three verses. The five groups are: masculine, neuter, feminine, very feminine, and least feminine. The first group is ka (ཀ) etc., five letters. The second group is kha (ཁ) etc., five letters. The third group is ga (ག) etc., five letters, and wa (ཝ), and the remaining zha (ཞ), za (ཟ), 'a (འ), ya (ཡ), sha (ཤ), sa (ས), twelve letters in total. The fourth group is nga (ང) etc., four letters. The fifth group is ra (ར), la (ལ), ha (ཧ), three letters. When these five classifications are condensed into masculine, neuter, and feminine, the very feminine and least feminine letters must be included in the feminine letters, because it is said that all ten letters that can be added originate from feminine letters. 1-5-2a ༈ Extracting the Ten Letters That Can Be Added From It The second is: 'Feminine letters' etc., one verse. The method of extraction should be understood as in the Thirty Verses. ༄། །Division of Prefixes into Four Categories The second meaning has two parts: general presentation and specific explanation of the method of addition. ༈ General Presentation The first is: 'Prefixes' etc., one and a half verses. Among the five prefixes, ba (བ་) is a masculine letter, ga (ག་) and da (ད་) are neuter letters, 'a (འ་) is a feminine letter, and ma (མ་) is a very feminine letter, meaning that each of these four has four uses. ༈ Specific Explanation of the Method of Addition The second has four points: what is added to, what is added by, how it is added, and why it is added. ༈ What is Added To and What is Added By The first two points are explained together, i.e., 'Masculine' etc., three verses. The masculine letter ba (བ་) can be added before the masculine letters ka (ཀ), ca (ཅ), ta (ཏ), tsa (ཙ), four letters; the feminine letters ga (ག་), da (ད་), zha (ཞ), za (ཟ), sha (ཤ), sa (ས), six letters; the very feminine letter na (ན་); and the least feminine letters ra (ར), la (ལ), two letters. Among these, ra (ར) and la (ལ) can only be stacked letters, ka (ཀ), ga (ག་), sa (ས་) can be both stacked and non-stacked letters, and the others can only be non-stacked letters. The feminine letter 'a (འ་) can be added before the feminine letters ga (ག་), ja (ཇ), da (ད་), ba (བ་), dza (ཛ), five letters; and the neuter letters kha (ཁ), cha (ཆ), tha (ཐ), pha (ཕ), tsha (ཚ), ten letters. The neuter letter ga (ག་) can be added before the masculine letters ca (ཅ), ta (ཏ), tsa (ཙ); the feminine letters da (ད་), zha (ཞ), za (ཟ), ya (ཡ), sha (ཤ), sa (ས); the very feminine letters nya (ཉ), na (ན་) 1-5-2b --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the letter འ་ is prefixed to eleven single letters. Now, the masculine letter ཀ་, the feminine letter ག་, and the very feminine letter ང་ are prefixed to six single letters. The very feminine letter མ་ is prefixed to the neuter letters ཁ་ཆ་ཐ་ཚ་, the feminine letters ག་ཇ་ད་ཛ་, and the very feminine letters ང་ཉ་ན་, these eleven single letters. The letter བ་ is not prefixed to the neuter letters ཁ་ཆ་ཐ་ཕ་ཚ་. The letters མ་ and འ་ are not prefixed to the masculine letters ཀ་ཅ་ཏ་པ་ཙའི་. The letters ག་ and ད་ are not prefixed to the neuter letters ཁ་ཆ་ཐ་ཕ་ཚ་. When the letters ག་ and ད་ are prefixed to ག་ and ད་, it is the neuter letter being prefixed to the feminine letter, not the neuter letter being prefixed to itself. This is because the prefixes of the base letters are classified into five categories, rather than each having its own separate mark. Among all the cases of prefixing, the exceptions are: the letter བ་ is not prefixed to the feminine or very feminine letters of its own group. When the neuter letters ག་ and ད་ meet their own group, they are not prefixed to the feminine letter. The feminine letters མ་ and འ་ are also not prefixed to the neuter letters of their own group. How to prefix? The third part is: 'How' and the following five lines. The four prefix signs should be read in such a way that, in sequence, their own sound is clearest from the sound of the base letter, or matches it, or is weaker than it, or is equal to it. Why prefix? The fourth part is: 'Why' and the following five lines. The masculine letter བ་ is used for the past tense, others, and accomplishing actions. The first case is like: 'གསོལ་བ་བཏབ།' (prayed) and 'ཕྲེང་བ་བཏགས་' (wore a rosary). The second case is like: 'གཏོར་མ་བཞེས་ཏེ་བཞེངས་' (took the torma and stood up). The third case is like: 'སྨོན་ལམ་བཏབ།' (made a wish) and 'སེམས་བསྐྱེད་' (generated bodhicitta). Among the neuter letters, ག་ and ད་, ག་ is used for both self and others, like: 'སེམས་བསྐྱེད་དུ་གཞུག་' (plant bodhicitta). It is used for the present tense like: 'བགེགས་གཞོམ།' (destroy obstacles) and 'ཕྲེང་བ་གཏད་' (give a rosary). ད་ is used for both self and others, like: 'དཔའ།' (hero), 'དབྱངས།' (voice), 'དབང་པོ་' (faculty). It is used for the present tense like: 'མེ་ཏོག་དགོད།' (offer flowers) and 'དྲིལ་བུ་དཀྲོལ་' (ring the bell). The feminine letter འ་ is used for self, like: 'བདག་འཚལ་ལོ་' (I seek). It is used for the future tense like: 'བདེ་བ་ལ་འགོད།' (settle in happiness) and 'བགེགས་འཇོམས་' (destroy obstacles). The very feminine letter མ་ is equal, that is, it applies to self, others, both self and others, and all three times. The first case is like: 'བདག་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆི་' (I go for refuge). The second case is like: 'རྡོ་རྗེ་སེམས་དཔའ་བདག་གྲུབ་མཛོད་ཅེས་པ་ལྟ་བུ།' (May Vajrasattva accomplish me). The third case is like: 'མཁས།' (wise), 'མཛེས།' (beautiful), 'མཆོག་' (supreme). The fourth case, used for the past tense, is like: 'མཛད་པ་མཛད་ཅིག' (perform actions). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
